Meet at Luxor Hotel and embark on a journey to Dendera

Start your day with an early meet-up at your Luxor hotel and head towards the Dendera temple. The journey spans 60 km and takes about 1 hour. We will take Luxor -Qena Agricultural road, rewarding you with an enriching insight into the lives of upper Egyptian village dwellers.

Arrive in Qena, a picturesque city. Cross the Nile to the west bank to explore the Dendera temple.

The Hathor Temple was predominantly established during the latter part of the Ptolemaic era, specifically under the rule of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII. Roman-era additions grace the structure too. Although constructed by a line of rulers who were not of Egyptian origin, the temple’s design is harmonious with the classical Egyptian architectural style, with the exception of the hypostyle hall front, which as per an entrance inscription, was built by Emperor Tiberius.

The temple complex also features images depicting the Ptolemaic rulers such as a vast relief of Cleopatra VII and Caesarion (her son with Julius Caesar and her co-sovereign) carved on an external temple wall. Both rulers are shown in traditional Egyptian attire, performing sacrifices.

The temple complex also signifies Hathor as a healing goddess. A sanatorium is present within the premises, drawing pilgrims seeking healing from the goddess. Sacred water was sanctified by pouring it over statues inscribed with divine texts. This water was used for baths, with the priests of Hathor dispensing ointments and providing quarters for those awaiting a dream visit from the goddess.
