- Alms Giving Ceremony - [5:30 am option only] In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is a gesture of respect offered by lay Buddhists to Buddhist monks, nuns, spiritually advanced individuals, or other sentient beings. Contrary to Western interpretations, it is not considered charity. This ceremony is a spiritual practice aimed at accumulating good karma for those who give alms. It symbolizes a connection to the spiritual realm and demonstrates humility and respect within secular society. The act of almsgiving creates a bond between the giver and the monk, representing spiritual values.
The morning alms giving is a vibrant Buddhist tradition in Luang Prabang, admired for its beauty and attracting many tourists. However, tourists unaware of its customs may inadvertently cause disruptions.
- The Morning Market - [5:30 am option only] Following the alms giving, a visit to a local morning market is planned. The Luang Prabang morning market, located along a few quiet streets near the Royal Palace, begins early and concludes by mid-morning. It is set up along side-streets adjacent to one of the city’s many Wats. While some vendors, like butchers and tourist-oriented stalls, have tables, most sellers display their goods on the ground, offering items ranging from rice and fresh vegetables to steamed fish, frogs, and the day’s catch.
Afterward, return to your accommodation for breakfast until 8:30 am.
- Riverview Park - The second part of the tour starts at Riverview Park on the peninsula’s tip. Here, a brief introduction to Luang Prabang is provided, standing at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers. From this point, proceed to the renowned Wat Xieng Thong temple.
- Wat Xiengthong - Wat Xiengthong served as the ceremonial gateway to the city and was the entry and exit point for foreign dignitaries for centuries. Ascend the stairs to the main gate and enter the temple as ancient dignitaries once did.
Wat Xieng Thong, formerly known as “The Temple of the Golden City,” is of significant cultural, historical, and architectural importance. It is peacefully located near the peninsula’s tip at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, with a grand staircase leading up from the Mekong. (Entrance fee 30,000 kip)
- Wat Sensoukharam - Next, engage in temple hopping in the neighborhood. At Wat Sene, which houses a school for novice monks, there is an opportunity to reconnect with novice monks encountered during the morning alms. The temple, constructed in 1718 by King Kitsarath using 100,000 stones from the Mekong River, is aptly named “Temple of 100,000 Treasures.”
- Royal Palace Museum - [The museum is closed on the last Thursday of every month and cannot be visited] The tour includes a visit to the Royal Palace, now the national museum, built by French colonialists between 1904-09. It showcases a beautiful collection of artifacts that reflect the richness of Lao culture. (Entrance fee 60,000 kip)
The tour concludes in the city center or with a transfer back to your hotel.
- Mount Phousi - The tour concludes with a climb up Phousi Hill. Rising 150m in the town’s center, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, its numerous temples, and the surrounding landscape extending to the distant mountains. (Entrance fee 30,000 kip)
