Highlights
  • North Leigh Roman Villa - This is one of the largest sites for a Roman villa and farm in Britain and they estimate hundred of people worked here. You can see some of the underground heating system and some minor walls standing.

This is our first scheduled stop and it is about 3.5 miles from start point so it should take about an hour to walk there. If you wish to pack a picnic, you could decide to stop here for lunch stop but otherwise we will continue to any of the following stops to buy lunch in a pub or cafe.

If folks wish to stop here

  • Long Hanborough - We start the tour in Long Hanborough and we walk through the village to access a walking path through meadows and woods before then turning back onto a country lane to walk to North Leigh Roman villa.

If you wish to, option to visit the local supermarket or pub to buy drinks or food to take with you on the walk.

  • Wilcote - We pass through this pretty village on our route.
This village has a pub so there is option to stop here for drink or lunch too.
  • Crawley - We pass through this very scenic village which has lots of quaint cottages using Cotswolds stone.
  • Minster Lovell - Very scenic ‘upmarket’ village with quaint cottages and roses plus streams through village. We will also stop to visit Minster Lovell manor which are medieval ruins.
Option to stop for lunch or drinks here too.
  • St Oswald’s Church - A curious chapel and one of the oldest and most rustic churches in England, set slightly up from the hamlet in the meadows. It’s normally always open for walkers to stop by and see its interior. Nice and cool on a hot day to stop here!
  • Swinbrook - This is possibly one of the most pretty local hamlet villages. Possible rest stop but no facilities here.
  • Burford - Burford is one of the most famous villages in the Cotswolds. Its main high street is actually quite high as it goes up a slope. The shops and buildings are nearly all postcard pretty and there are many shops and cafes here. Our tour finishes in Burford and from Burford, we can help you catch a bus back to where you need to go or book a taxi to collect you (taxi or bus fare is not included in the tour). If you wish to stay the night in Burford, then I can suggest places to stay too.

Additional Information

By fortuitous circumstance, I reside in a picture-perfect locale fringing the renowned Cotswolds territory. This area is a quick trip away from the city of Oxford - a place where I serve as a seasoned tour guide. If you opt to go on a tour conducted by me, you’ll have the opportunity to gain insights about not just the heritage of the Cotswolds, but also its ties to Oxford and, for instance, its celebrated Pre-Raphaelite artists like William Morris who had domiciles in this territory. During the tour, I’ll accord you an introduction to the historical landmarks we’ll drop by, including a Roman Villa and the debris of a medieval Manor House.
