The mining history in Idrija dates back to the 15th century. According to legend, in 1492, the same year Columbus embarked on his voyage to the Americas, a bucket maker discovered a small amount of liquid mercury in a local spring. Only the Almadén mercury mine in Spain was larger. Both towns were so renowned that their names were used for mining towns in North America, namely New Idria and New Almadén in California.
Visitors descend into the mine with a professional guide through Anthony’s Shaft, which was excavated in 1500. They explore the mine’s underground world, discovering hidden cinnabar ore pockets and mercury droplets, learning about mercury mining techniques, encountering life-size mannequins of workers from different eras, and visiting the unique mid-18th century underground Chapel of the Holy Trinity.
- Gewerkenegg Castle - The old town is dominated by Gewerkenegg Castle, which means “mine castle” in German. Constructed between 1522 and 1533, the castle houses an exhibition detailing the five-hundred-year history of the mercury mine’s operations and a remarkable retrospective exhibition of Idrija lace. The castle courtyard is beautifully adorned.
The craft of bobbin lace-making has been a significant part of Idrija’s history for over 300 years. Idrija lace is used to create cloths, napkins, curtains, bed linen, clothing, clothing ornaments, and even earrings, necklaces, and gloves.
After a delightful half-day experience, the tour will return to Ljubljana. Drop-off will be at the same location as the pick-up.
