The Route of the Saints is a journey through beliefs, passions, and visions that traverses the historic neighborhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, and Graça. It weaves through remarkable events, joyful miracles, and extraordinary legends.
The Church’s first patron saint of Lisbon was Saint Crispim, a shoemaker martyred in Soissons. However, Lisbon was unfamiliar with him and instead favored Vicente de Zaragoza, a deacon who is said to have sailed to southern Portugal over four centuries after his martyrdom. Yet, Saint Vincent was eventually eclipsed by Saint Anthony, the miracle-working preacher who died and was canonized in Padova, but was born and raised in Lisbon. Legend has it that he miraculously returned to Lisbon after falling asleep, in a spectacular act of bilocation.
Even today, few residents know who the official patron of Lisbon is, but the mysticism of the saints continues to influence the culture and popular imagination of this city, which is both blissful and unholy.
