On the banks of the Tagus is an apogee of Manueline architecture.
In the spot where the Jerónimos Monastery stands today, next to the old Belém beach, was originally a small hermitage dedicated to Santa Maria that had been built by the Infante D. Henrique, in 1452. At the start of the 16th century King Manuel I’s intention to have a large monastery erected there was acknowledged by the Holy See, and which was donated to the Order of the Friars of St. Jerome. The epitome of Manueline architecture and intrinsically linked to the Discoveries, this monastery is the most remarkable Portuguese monastic ensemble of its time and one of the main European churches.

It would have been okay except... - We were very disheartened with our driver/guide, Luis. He mocked my itinerary when he asked what we wanted to see and I showed him what was advertised for this tour. He exclaimed, “Don’t tell me you’re a planner?!” As I was going through my list and asked him where Parque Eduardo VII as listed on the advertisement for this tour, he said “ That is just across your hotel. You could have just walked it, if you want to see it.” When we first rode the van, he told my husband and my son to sit in the back, my mother in law in the middle and I sat in the front passenger seat. So when my husband asked him if he can speak loudly because, really, he was just talking to me about the places we were touring, he told my husband and son to sit up front so they can hear him instead of accommodating my husband’s request! We were all pissed at him but what else can we do? We have him for the rest of the day. He took us to a not-so-good neighborhood in an effort to show us Lisbon’s street art and when I expressed discomfort with the surroundings and told him we should leave the place already, he said, “Oh come on! You’re scared?! I am with you, you shouldn’t be scared.” The point was, it felt like he was just mocking my concerns and didn’t really accommodate us considering this was a private tour. I really think one of the reasons why we didn't fall in love with Lisbon was because our tour guide didn't help us see the city for what it really is.
