nia: “I was born in the Alentejo, Portugal, and it is my roots that inspire me in the search for the flavors, perfumes and textures for the recipes that I have developed for many gastronomic magazines and books.
I am a publisher, food developer and editor of several publications and food developer, cook and manager of a different catering service at In Love with Food and Maria’s Table.”

Additional Information

After exploring the market to your heart’s content, you’ll make your way back to your host’s residence where you’ll learn to cook authentic Portuguese cuisine with the ingredients you’ve purchased. This will culminate in a delightful luncheon featuring the dishes you’ve prepared!

Antónia will guide you through the process of preparing each dish and you are more than welcome to lend a hand! Following the cooking session, she will provide the recipes for you to keep.

Her husband will be present throughout the entire experience, regaling you with interesting anecdotes and valuable insights about Portugal.

Meeting point: Mercado de Arroios, Flower shop outside the market. The place is very well located and served by Metro (Alameda station) and by Bus. The building doesn't have elevator but we live on the first floor.

A lovely Portuguese experience - My husband and I had a lovely afternoon with Maria and Louis. We met Maria and two other guests at the seafood market. After we decided on a menu, Maria purchased the ingredients and we all followed her to her house just a few blocks away. Louis kept our wine glasses full as we helped prep vegetables for a fish stew as well as a chorizo egg dish. The table was beautifully decorated with fruit, cheeses, breads, and jams. The dishes prepared were delicious and we left their home with full bellies. It was a delightful afternoon and I would recommend this market/cooking/eating afternoon to anyone wanting a true Portuguese experience. Thanks again to our lovely host and hostess.

Antonia and Luis were remarkable hosts! This is a must do! - Antonia showed us the Mercado de Arroios and was a knowledgeable and gracious host. She invited us to taste and sample the delights found in this beautiful market. Her sense of humor and warm personality charmed us and everyone she came in contact with, such an enchanting person! Once we had decided upon the menu we were off to her home, just a short walk from the market. She and Luis were so welcoming and excellent hosts. Antonia showed us her skills as a chef and allowed us to be as involved in the process as we wanted, and we wanted to be in on the whole process! I had fallen in love with Portugal and it’s people but spending time in their home was far superior to any experience we had. Antonia, we will remember our time with you and never forget the special memories we made in your home, thank you!

Sincere, flavorful experience - We most enjoyed getting to know our gracious and friendly hosts and hearing about their life. Visiting the market, and, of course, the tasty food we made together are also highlights. Warmly recommended for anyone who cares about people, food, and is looking for something sincere. :)

Exceptional Portuguese Cooking Experience - The private cooking class with Maria was absolutely incredible. We enjoyed shopping at the local market and learning many Portuguese seafood cooking techniques. The food and wine were perfectly selected. We will visit Maria again. 🍷🍤🍮

Fabulous market and cooking experience. - Maria met us at the market and explained what and why she was buying. She asked our preferences at all points. Once we purchased very fresh ingredients we walked to her house. We were made very comfortable and served water and wine. She put together some starters and we had some of those. She gave us directions and we helped prepare the meal. Everything was delicious. We had great conversation, good food and lovely wine. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We learned a great deal about Portuguese culture along with our meal. Thank you Maria!

True taste of Portugal - This experience was a fabulous one. Maria & Luis are not only wonderful cooks but exceptional hosts. It was a national holiday so the market was closed, but they still opened their home to us! This is a must do if you really want a true taste of Portugal.

Wonderful cooking class with a warm and inviting local chef - A very special experience cooking with a local chef and her family in her home. Tour started in a market where we were asked for our preferences, the menu decided based in our input, and selections of fresh cheese, vegetables fruits meats bread for our class. We then proceeded to tht chef's home where we were welcomed like family. We prepared a fabulous multi course lunch with wonderful conversations about life in Lisbon and Portugal. My friends and I agree this was a highlight of our stay in Lisbon. Would highly recommend this cooking class!

Our favorite day in Lisbon! - This was our favorite day in Lisbon! We met Antonia at a local market and bought the ingredients for our lunch. We then walked about 5 minutes to her home, where we met Antonia’s husband Luis and were welcomed into their home. We really enjoyed seeing a normal Lisbon neighborhood outside of the tourist zone! Antonia asked us in advance what we wanted to cook. We asked to learn to cook in a cataplana, and to learn how to cook octopus. We also cooked delicious clams. While we cooked, we sipped wine and talked together as if we were old friends. Luis is a photographer and the photos in their home were amazing. After we cooked, of course we ate! With more wine! We were there until late in the afternoon and could have stayed all night if Antonina didn’t have to cook for a wedding she was catering a couple of days later! Do not hesitate to enjoy this unique experience! It was the highlight of our trip!
