First Day of the Castles
Castelo de S. Jorge - This iconic landmark of the city was originally constructed in the second century BC. Throughout its extensive history, the structure has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Despite this, it maintains a grand and imposing presence, with a strict symmetry in its architectural design. Visiting such fascinating sites in Lisbon can be challenging, as the castle is perched atop a mountain.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Often ranked as the top attraction in Lisbon by many tour guides, this temple is considered the most popular tourist site in the entire country and is part of the “Seven Wonders of Portugal.” Annually, it attracts approximately 800,000 to 900,000 visitors. Vasco da Gama prayed in the chapel, where the monastery now stands, before his voyage to India (his remains are now housed in a sarcophagus inside the building). Historians note that the Jeronimos was founded in 1496, but construction continued for two centuries. The Jeronimos serves as both a monastery for parishioners and a memorial, housing the ashes of royal family members. Besides the temple itself, the courtyard with its meticulously arranged flowerbeds is worth exploring. A visit to this site is essential for a complete trip to the capital.
Palácio Nacional da Ajuda - Following a devastating earthquake in the mid-18th century that nearly obliterated the royal family’s castle, construction of a new palace for the Portuguese monarchs began in 1796 on the Ajuda hills. The three-story building features a light façade adorned with sculptures and pilasters, showcasing a neoclassical architectural style. The preserved interiors of the palace are particularly noteworthy. The spacious rooms display ancient tapestries, artworks by renowned artists, ceiling frescoes, royal furniture, and large mirrors. Even the finest hotels in Lisbon cannot rival such opulence.
Day of Walks and Museums
Jardim Zoologico - This unique zoo distinguishes itself by having no cages or enclosures. The animals reside in recreated “natural” habitats: a house resembling an entire African village was built for the rhinoceros, macaques and chimpanzees swing on real trees, and tigers and lions lounge on the “savannah” grass. For comfortable animal viewing and picnicking, tables and benches are available throughout the complex. A visit to this delightful zoo is a must, especially if traveling to Lisbon with children.
Rossio Square - The attractions of Porto and Lisbon form a unique duo of Portuguese gems, offering a chance to explore the most atmospheric locations in Portugal, experience its vibrant character, and delve into its rich history. The ancient buildings and historic streets of these cities allow visitors to journey back in time and gain insight into the state’s illustrious past. Rossio Square is one of Lisbon’s most iconic locations and is a must-visit. It is surrounded by 17th and 18th-century buildings, now home to numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants, ranging from modern eateries to elegant Art Nouveau venues. Over the centuries, the square has witnessed many events, including Roman hippodromes, bullfights, festivals, military parades, and even executions. Today, it hosts city and public celebrations, showcases unique installations, and offers a place to relax.
National Coach Museum - This museum attracts over 200,000 visitors annually. The center’s exhibits include a variety of carriages, racing carriages, stagecoaches, landaus, and strollers from different eras. The museum was established by order of D. Amelia (the last ruler of the state) in May 1905, within a historic 18th-century building.
