Additional Information

Lisbon has long served as a convergence point for diverse groups of people. Significant Jewish communities have made their homes in this region, adding to its cultural richness and thriving commerce.

This journey presents the chance to behold key elements of the city’s Jewish heritage, including the 19th-century Lisbon Synagogue, the Rossio - the site of the Inquisition’s court, which currently houses the Dona Maria national theatre and the Jewish Memorial.

In the vicinity of Penha de França district lies the Jewish Cemetery, erected in 1868. Still in active use by the Jewish community, its gravestones are typically horizontal in alignment, following the Sephardic tradition.

In Alfama, one of Lisbon’s most iconic districts, there existed a modest Jewish quarter until the 14th century, situated on land that Dom Dinis bestowed upon their chief Rabbi, Judas Navarro.

A stimulating journey - Emotional to hear the history and hard to fathom what our ancestors went through. Loved walking through their neighborhood. Seeing one of the two synagogues functioning today was rewarding and good to know that Judiasm is still alive in Lisboa.

Very knowledgeable tour guide - The guide was very knowledgable and able to provide the history of Jewish life in Lisbon. Unfortunately being Shabbat, we were unable to visit the synagogue.

Outstanding Tour - The tour led by Paulo Shafer is brilliant! His depth of knowledge is phenomenal and his delivery is excellent. It is a most worthwhile tour giving one an incredible overview of the history and present situation of Portuguese Jewry. We had a wonderful morning and extend huge congratulations to Paulo for a job brilliantly done. Thank you.

Our guide John was fabulous with... -
Our guide John was fabulous with immense knowledge and very caring and courteous we cannot fault him. However I was very disappointed with the trip as the visit to the synagogue was very very short. The guide had arranged a time at 1130 for us to visit and after waiting for him for 20 minutes he informed our guide he could not see us until 1pm. The guide in the synagogue Alan was quite rude couldn't be bothered and was only interested in extracting as much money in souvenirs for the synagogue. The whole visit lasted 10 minutes and he could not wait to see us go. We had to ask him the questions. We were never offered a visit to the Jewish cemetery and certainly did not see the Jewish heritage engravings on the walls of the ghetto. It was meant to be a 7 hour tour and we were delivered back to our cruise ship one and three quarter hours early. When I asked why we were not having the full 7 hours we were told because the traffic was not heavy. We paid the exorbitant rate 257 for a four and a quarter hour tour. This was very unsatisfactory. Yes we did see insides of 2 beautiful churches but that was not what we paid for we asked for a Jewish Heritage Tour and that is not what we got. This was our first visit to Lisbon and we were bitterly disappointed. We would not recommend this tour to our friends,
