- Alfama - Lisbon’s oldest and most enchanting neighborhood, often regarded as the historic heart of the city. Its steep, cobblestone streets remain as they were in medieval times. Alfama is famous for its fado houses and the grand celebrations in honor of “Santo António” (St. Anthony) in June, drawing thousands to its streets. This area survived the devastating 1755 earthquake, helping preserve its authentic charm. The neighborhood retains a Moorish feel with its narrow alleys, staircases, and laundry hanging from windows.
- Chiado - On August 25, 1988, a devastating fire partially destroyed this area. Thanks to a renovation project led by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Chiado has since been revitalized and now boasts the highest real estate prices in Portugal. Known as Lisbon’s most iconic and cosmopolitan neighborhood, it is filled with a variety of shops, fashion boutiques, ateliers, art galleries, bookstores, cafes, restaurants, and bars.
- Estrela - A serene and affluent district where you can visit the Royal Basilica of Estrela with its ornate Baroque facade and the lovely Estrela Garden, offering stunning views over the Tagus River and the red spires of the 25th April Bridge. Esteemed as one of Lisbon’s finest neighborhoods, it features spacious homes and well-preserved palaces and mansions, making it a quiet yet trendy area.
- Miradouro das Portas do Sol - After a moment of relaxation at this scenic viewpoint, we’ll descend the hill to greet Mouraria, Lisbon’s most multicultural neighborhood. Here, you’ll find a diverse array of restaurants, as about a fifth of the population hails from Asia, particularly China, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
- Torre de Belem - Belém Tower: Constructed on the northern bank of the Tagus River between 1514 and 1520, this tower is one of the architectural gems from the reign of King Manuel I.
- Chafariz da Praca 25 de Abril - One of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks! This steel suspension bridge over the Tagus River is often likened to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
- Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - A UNESCO World Heritage site, this monastery is a prime example of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon.
- Praca da Figueira - Once the main marketplace of Lisbon, this square housed a covered market built in 1885, which was demolished in the 1950s. In its place now stands a bronze equestrian statue of King João I.
