Originally founded atop a hill for ocean views, the bay eventually silted up, making it a landlocked town since the 15th century. Óbidos is not only known for its medieval architecture but also for its lively festivals, bookstores, small museums, chocolate, and ginjinha (cherry liqueur; one per person is included in the price). In recent years, Óbidos has been transforming into a literary hub.
