Discovering the Magic of Sintra and Cascais with Kids
When I heard about the Sintra & Cascais Scenic Coastal Adventure, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to explore Portugal’s rich history and stunning landscapes with my children. Our day trip from Lisbon promised a blend of enchanting palaces, charming towns, and breathtaking coastal views, and it did not disappoint.
A Magical Morning in Sintra
Our adventure began bright and early as we departed from Lisbon, the city still waking up as we made our way to Sintra. The morning mist added a touch of mystery to the landscape, and I could feel the excitement building in my children as we approached the enchanting Pena Palace. Our guide, David, was a treasure trove of knowledge, sharing fascinating stories about the history and architecture of the palace. The kids were captivated by the tales of King Ferdinand II and the unique blend of Manueline and Moorish influences that made the palace feel like something out of a fairy tale.
Visiting the palace first thing in the morning was a brilliant decision. We managed to avoid the crowds, allowing us to explore the vibrant colors and intricate details of the palace at our own pace. The views from the top were breathtaking, even with the mist, and the kids loved imagining what life might have been like for the royals who once called this place home. I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly, and having a guide like David made the experience all the more enriching.
Exploring Sintra’s Hidden Gems
After our palace visit, we had some free time to explore the charming streets of Sintra. David recommended trying the local pastry, “Travesseiro,” which was a hit with the kids. We then made our way to Quinta da Regaleira, a short uphill walk from the town center. The gardens and the famous Initiation Well were a highlight for the whole family. The kids were thrilled to explore the winding paths and hidden tunnels, and I appreciated the blend of history and adventure that the site offered.
It’s important to note that tickets for Quinta da Regaleira are not included in the tour, so it’s wise to plan ahead and book them in advance. We were fortunate to secure tickets on the day, but it’s not something to rely on. The experience was well worth the effort, and the kids left with a newfound appreciation for the mysteries and legends of Sintra.
Coastal Charms of Cascais
Our final stop was the picturesque town of Cascais, where we had the freedom to choose our own adventure. Some families opted for a leisurely lunch by the beach, while others, like us, decided to explore the town’s charming streets and stunning coastline. The kids were eager to dip their toes in the Atlantic Ocean, and I couldn’t resist joining them. The water was refreshing, and the beaches were pristine, making it a perfect spot for families to unwind.
Before heading back to Lisbon, we treated ourselves to some delicious ice cream at Santini, a local favorite. The line was long, but it moved quickly, and the creamy, flavorful scoops were well worth the wait. As we made our way back to the city, I reflected on the day’s adventures and felt grateful for the opportunity to share such a memorable experience with my children. The Sintra & Cascais Scenic Coastal Adventure is a must-do for families visiting Lisbon, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
