A claim to familiarity with Portugal’s capital wouldn’t hold water without a detour into Alfama - the womb from whence Lisbon emerged.
The canvas of Alfama is coloured by a diversified population, the descendants of Crusaders, Moors, erstwhile slaves, Jews and a myriad other influences. It’s a melting pot so blended, differentiating lineage becomes near impossible.
When it comes to navigating Alfama, maps become extraneous. Just tag along with us. We commence from the top sides, starting at the viewpoint of Porta do Sol. Our route unveils minuscule alleyways, fragments of Moorish fortifications and a spectacle of street art. Follow Rua dos Remédios with us, and you’ll spy the Manueline styled portal of the Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios on the left - reminiscent of the grand Belém monuments.
In two hours, we will barely begin to peel back the layers of Alfama, but my objective is to immerse you in this cultural cocktail and demonstrate that maps are mere accessories - your eyes or the camera lens will guide you better.
