Nestled at an altitude of 7,200 ft, Kiambethu was purchased and cultivated by AB McDonell in 1910. He pioneered the commercial growth, production, and sale of tea in Kenya – a staple product that is now one of the country’s major exports and which you’ll get to sample. The farm has been home to five generations and is currently managed by Fiona Vernon, his granddaughter.

Tea Farm Tour - I visited the Kiambethu Tea Farm on a misty day, which lent the plantation a sense of ethereal beauty. We began the tour with hot tea and biscuits as Fiona, the lady giving us the tour, walked us through the processing of tea and the different parts of the tea plant. My friend and I then wandered the beautiful garden infront before being served a lovely lunch. The trip was relaxing. I would recommend it to anyone.

Safe drive and wonderful informative hostess - The drive to and from Kiambethu was lovely , my driver Paul was very considerate and drove gently ( considering Nairobi traffic) he offered a choice of music, and was informative on the surroundings . Fiona is truly an inspiration . Wonderful in depth explanation on the growing , manufacturing process and shipments of the tea . The lounge was beautifully presented and served in a beautiful garden setting . All in all a very good day experience , just outside of Nairobi .

A beautiful day on a tea farm - A great day out in one of the most beautiful settings in Kenya. A truly blissful day learning about the history of tea in Kenya and the processes that go into making a cup of tea. Followed by a delicious lunch in a stunning setting. Fiona and team were fantastic, they made us feel so welcome and answered any questions we asked. It’s worth noting the transportation to the farm is private but the actual tour on the tea farm is not, you will be part of a group. That was ok for us but if you did want a completely private tour you may need to make alternative arrangements.

Exceedingly great tour - My family and I booked the tour on our last day in Kenya, the owner was very knowledgeable. The tea was so good we had to buy some to bring home. The tea and cookies were so good and all homemade. Then came a 3 course lunch that was so amazing, everything was homemade and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this tour. We purchased our tickets directly from the farm’s website and used our private driver.

Great day out! - The day was most enjoyable. The tour company representative, Peter, was on time, friendly, drove safely and was very friendly. The experience at the Tea Farms was excellent - Fiona, Sarah and the rest of the staff are friendly, warm and accommodating and kindly shared so much information about the farming and the tea industry. The walk in the forest was informative and relaxing! The food was all locally sourced, and FANTASTIC (they make their own butter that is to die for!). Well worth the experience.

Interesting and knowledgeable tour of the tea farm - We booked a tour of the Limuru Kiambethu Tea Farm through Perfect Wilderness Safaris & Day Tours. It was a great day. Fiona, the owner explained the history of the farm that has been in her family for 5 generations. She showed us the old tea bush that was originally grown to make tea. She explained the total process by taking us out to the field to show us how the tea leaves are picked, and the bushes are maintained. She expained the supply chain from the field planting to the finished product at the auction house. Went back to the house and with our cup of tea, gathered in her living room where she showed us samples of tea at the various proceses. She answered all our questions about the tea thoroughly. The tour included a delicious home made buffet lunceon on the grounds under individual umbrella tables. We highly recommend this tour 4 hour tea adventure. We were picked up on time by our driver George from Wildeness Tours. He was excellent. George was informative and told us many intersting facts on the areas that we passed through. He was very friendly, personable and safe driver. In fact he was the same interesting driver that picked us up at the airport a couple of days earlier. We felt very comfortable with him, and hope to experience more tours with him as the driver.

Great way to learn about tea in Kenya - and eat great food! - I really enjoyed this tour of the Kiambethu Tea Farm. The owner led the tour of the grounds and she was a guide. We also got to tour the surrounding forest and learn about the indigenous plants. My favorite part was definitely the tea and food, though! Both come from the farm and they are delicious. Also, the driver who picked me up from the hotel (Albert) was really nice and it was fun talking with him during the hour-long trip each way. He was also very knowledgeable about the city.

I had a great time with Santa the driver, who also was helpful when I asked general questions about Nairobi. Would definitely recommend this experience to others.
