Lhasa Sightseeing - Potala & Jokhang (3658m)
Potala Palace - The guide will introduce guests to Lhasa’s two most significant historic sites: the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple. There will be time to explore the bustling Barkhor pilgrim circuit and market surrounding the Jokhang. This massive structure, home to successive Dalai Lamas and the seat of the Tibetan government, dominates the views of Lhasa.
Jokhang Temple - The most important and revered religious structure in Tibet, built by King Songsten Gampo (c.639-47) along with Ramoche to house images brought as dowry by his Nepali and Chinese wives.
Lhasa - Ganden - Sera (4950m/45km)
Ganden Monastery - Located just 45kms outside Lhasa, Ganden’s setting high on a ridge overlooking the Kyi Chu Valley is breathtaking. After lunch at the monastery restaurant, guests can explore the main chapels, including the vast assembly hall. After optionally completing the 1½ hour kora (circumambulation route), the journey continues to Lhasa.
Sera Monastery - In the afternoon, a visit to Sera Monastery, one of the “great three” Gelug monasteries of Tibet, is planned. A highlight is the Monks’ debate, which takes place around 3 - 5 in the afternoon.
Lhasa - Yamdrok Lake - Gyantse (3950m/267km)
Shigatse - Gya Tsola Pass - Sakya (4280/229km)
Sakya - Rombuk - Lao Tingri (4300m/333km)
Lao Tingri - Shigatse (3840m/291km)
Shigatse - Nyemo - Dumxung (4300m/327km)
Dumxung - Namtso - Lhasa (4918m/238km)
Lake Namtso - An early morning drive to Lake Namtso, crossing the Largen-La pass (4970m) to reach the lake. The final 18km are traveled by the National Park eco-bus, but the journey is well worth it. North of Lhasa, the Tibetan Plateau’s second-largest saltwater lake, Namtso Chukmo, is a stunning site, dominated by the snow-capped peak of Nyenchen Thanglha. It is teeming with migratory birds, and the cave hermitages at Tashidor are a popular pilgrimage destination.
