Highlights
  • Leeuwarden - The historical center of Leeuwarden is easily explorable on foot, making it the perfect city for an audio tour. You will be amazed by the many unique stories that are hidden behind the medieval facades, courtyards, cobbled streets, and picturesque canals. Stories that have been carefully gathered for you. Let yourself be guided along all the interesting and beautiful places Leeuwarden has to offer and learn all about the history of this city and how the city got his own verion of the leaning Pisa Tower.

In the following points, you’ll see just a few examples of the many attractions we will pass by.

  • De Waag - In the past, De Waag was the center of trade. There has been a weigh house in Leeuwarden since 1483, but the current weigh house building was constructed around 1595. De Waag was in use until 1880, after which weighing took place in the Beurs- en waaggebouw (Stock Exchange and Weighing Building) at Beursplein. Nowadays, the weigh house building houses a cozy lunchroom with a sunny terrace.
  • Oldehove - When visiting Leeuwarden, you must not miss the city’s iconic landmark: the Oldehove. The tower was built in 1529 and leans more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Admire it from both the inside and outside, and once you reach the top, you’ll have a beautiful view over the city.
  • Blokhuispoort - Until ten years ago, the Blokhuispoort still served as a penitentiary, but nowadays, it has been transformed into a cultural business center. In an inspiring environment, approximately 100 creatives work independently and often collaborate, and you can also find dining and drinking establishments like Café de Bak and Proefverlof.
  • Church Saint Boniface - The church is dedicated to Saint Boniface and was built in 1882/84 according to a design by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers. The church is not very old, but it is very beautiful. The interior of the Catholic church is richly decorated with painted wall panels, as many as five altars, enormous stained glass windows, and numerous unique ornaments.
