Highlights
  • Castello di Acaya - We will pass by the mediaeval town of Acaya, taking a look at the castle and its defensive wall. We will stop in the main square for a “Caffé leccese” (coffee with ice and almond syrup) break.
  • Riserva Naturale Le Cesine - We cycle trough this well preserved natural reserve - where you will be inebriated by the smell of eucalyptus and other autocton plants/trees.
  • San Foca - If the weather is good we will stop here for a swim break, to restore during the hottest hours and eating the sandwich that we usually buy in Acaya.
  • Struda - Back on track through some small villages such as Vanze and Strudà, where we can take a break. Riding through some country lanes we’ll see olive trees, recognizable for their size and for the logs, true works of art made by nature. We’ll go back to Lecce through side streets between the campaigns.

Additional Information

The region separating Lecce from the sea encapsulates Salento’s stunning scenery, still holding evidence of its significant historical influence.

Venturing southeast from Lecce via minor roads, we’ll reach the fortified settlement of Acaya, a Messapic location where the grand castle, the village walls, and its age-old city layout remain intact.

Next, we’ll head to the WWF nature reserve ‘Le Cesine’, home to numerous exquisite plants and aquatic birds. We’ll cool off with a refreshing dip at Torre Specchia, and then cycle back to Lecce through a countryside dotted with olive trees and quaint villages.

Great ride - I did the self guided tour. Good bike, well prepared and GPS worked really good. A nice route through Lecce city, the small vilages south of Lecce, the olive groves and to the see. Although, the olive groves are what is left of it, this because all the olive trees are dead caused by the bacteria.

Amazing day with fantastic guide - It was a perfect day to bike. Our inspiring guide Melo appeared to be an expert in nature and food. After a long ride in the suburbs of Lecce and the Cesine parc , we enjoyed a fantastic Picnic on the beach where Melo , chef in natural food, served us local dishes and great stories.

Excellent bikes - Cube woman bike and Scott.man bike. Scott was brand new. Both excellent quality, also for off road. We went to San Foca, some parts off road. Very nice lady giving advice. I would go there again.

Enjoyably active day exploring Salento's countryside - My wife and I had our guide all to ourselves, and enjoyed his company for some 6 and a half hours. The journey out of the Lecce suburbs wasn't that thrilling, but once in the countryside we really appreciated the landscape, including the Adriatic coast where we stopped for a picnic lunch and paddled in the clear water. The old town of Acaya was also impressive. If it could be improved we would have liked a little more insight into the history/ flora & fauna of the area, but generally it was a worthwhile trip. Mostly flat cycling, some offroad, covering some 25miles or so - enough but manageable for our age group ( around 70) given that we're not regular cyclists
