The journey began with a warm welcome from our guides, Paul and Ben, who picked us up from Denarau. Their enthusiasm was infectious, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.

The drive to Lautoka was filled with laughter and stories, as we were joined by a small group of fellow adventurers and some tour consultants eager to experience this new offering. Upon reaching Abaca village, the starting point of our hike, we were greeted with the kind of hospitality that makes you feel instantly at home. After a brief introduction and settling park entry, we embarked on our journey.

The Ascent: A Test of Endurance

The first kilometer was a climb up a clear access road, leading us to a clearing where we paused for a briefing. The crossing was manageable without getting wet, but the path soon led us to a steeper climb. Our destination was the ‘Pizza Hut,’ a sturdy hut offering breathtaking views of the valley below. The sight of waterfalls cascading down the valley was a reward in itself, especially after recent rains had swelled their flow.

Continuing along the valley edge, the jungle enveloped us in its thick embrace. The river, now a constant companion to our right, guided us to the final crossing. This time, shoes-off wading was necessary, or for the nimble, a daring rock-hop. The waterfall that awaited us was nothing short of spectacular. Its crystal-clear waters invited us for a swim, a refreshing dip that was both invigorating and bracingly cold.

We lingered at the waterfall, capturing memories in photos and soaking in the serene beauty. The return journey seemed to pass in a blur, as is often the case when retracing one’s steps. Back in Abaca, we were treated to a traditional Fijian meal, lovingly prepared by one of the village women. Sitting in her home, savoring the flavors of Fiji, I felt a deep connection to the land and its people.
