Embracing the Unexpected: My Journey on the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu
When a landslide closed the Inca Trail, I found myself on the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu. This unexpected adventure led me to connect with Andean communities, explore breathtaking landscapes, and immerse myself in the rich biodiversity of the region. Join me as I recount this unforgettable journey.
A Serendipitous Start
As a biologist and environmental activist, my heart beats for the wild, untamed beauty of nature. When I heard about the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu, I was intrigued. The trek promised an off-the-beaten-path adventure, a chance to connect with traditional Andean communities, and an opportunity to immerse myself in the rich biodiversity of the region. Little did I know that this journey would begin with an unexpected twist.
Originally, my friend and I had planned to embark on the Luxury Inca Trail tour. However, a landslide led to the closure of the trail, and we were offered the chance to switch to the Lares Trek. Despite the initial disappointment, we decided to embrace this new adventure. The Trexperience team was incredibly supportive, ensuring we were comfortable with the change and even refunding the difference in cost. Their professionalism and care set the tone for what would become an unforgettable journey.
Immersed in Andean Culture
Our adventure began with a visit to the Calca market, where we purchased supplies for the villagers we would meet along the trek. This experience was a beautiful reminder of the importance of community and the interconnectedness of our world. As we continued to the Lares Hot Springs, the soothing waters prepared us for the trek ahead, easing any lingering tension from our travels.
The trek itself was a feast for the senses. The breathtaking scenery of mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and lakes was a constant companion. The terrain was challenging, yet the slow pace allowed us to fully appreciate the beauty surrounding us. At the highest point, we participated in a memorable ceremony led by a Trexperience Shaman, a moment that resonated deeply with my passion for cultural preservation and respect for nature.
Camping in the village of Canchacancha was a highlight. Meeting the local community members and witnessing their joy as they received the supplies we brought was heartwarming. It was a poignant reminder of the impact we can have when we travel with purpose and intention.
A Culinary and Cultural Delight
The Trexperience team went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. Our chef, Amilcar, and his assistants, Steven and Alejandro, amazed us with their culinary skills. From restaurant-quality meals to a bakery-quality cake and even a BBQ, their creativity and dedication were awe-inspiring. It was a testament to the incredible human spirit and the ability to create joy in the most unexpected places.
Our guides, Monica and William, were exceptional. Monica’s knowledge of the trek, the flora and fauna, and Peruvian culture enriched our experience. Her stories and insights brought the landscape to life, and her care and attention ensured we felt safe and supported throughout the journey. William’s enthusiasm and eagerness to learn made our interactions delightful, as we exchanged language lessons and shared laughter.
The trek concluded with visits to the traditional Incan town of Ollantaytambo and the iconic Machu Picchu. Despite the fog that shrouded Machu Picchu, the magic of the place was undeniable. Monica’s explanations and historical insights added depth to our exploration, making it a truly special experience.
Reflecting on this adventure, I am grateful for the serendipity that led us to the Lares Trek. It was a journey that not only fulfilled my love for nature and culture but also reinforced the importance of sustainable and mindful travel. The memories we created will last a lifetime, and I am eager to share this experience with others who seek to connect with the world in meaningful ways.
