From Canopy Dreams to Cultural Delights: A Day in Lagos
Eager to explore the vibrant wildlife of Lagos, I embarked on a journey to the Lekki Conservation Centre. Little did I know, an unexpected closure would lead to a day of cultural discovery and unforgettable experiences.
Arrival and Unexpected Closure
As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, I was thrilled to explore the Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos. The anticipation of walking the longest canopy walkway in Africa and capturing the vibrant wildlife was palpable. My partner and I were picked up by Tolu, our guide from Royalties Tours, who greeted us with a warm smile and a van stocked with refreshments. Her punctuality and thoughtfulness set a positive tone for the day.
However, upon arrival at the conservation center, we were met with an unexpected twist. The gates were closed, and a sign informed us of a two-week closure for renovations. It was a moment of disappointment, as I had envisioned capturing the playful antics of monkeys and the elegance of peacocks through my lens. Yet, Tolu’s calm demeanor and quick thinking turned the situation around.
A Taste of Lagos
Determined to make our day memorable, Tolu asked us about our culinary preferences and whisked us away to a local eatery. The flavors of Lagos danced on our taste buds, a delightful surprise that added a new dimension to our adventure. Over lunch, Tolu shared stories of Lagos’s rich history and culture, painting a vivid picture of the city beyond its wildlife.
With our spirits lifted, Tolu suggested a visit to the Kalakuta Republic Museum, the former home of the legendary musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The museum was a treasure trove of history and music, offering a glimpse into the life of a man who used his art to challenge the status quo. As a photographer, I found inspiration in the vibrant colors and stories that filled the space.
Art and Reflection
Though the day had not gone as planned, Tolu’s dedication to our experience was unwavering. She offered to take us to the Nike Art Gallery, a haven for art lovers. However, the day’s adventures had taken their toll, and we opted to return to our hotel, our hearts full of gratitude for Tolu’s efforts.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that travel is as much about the unexpected as it is about the planned. While I missed the chance to explore the canopy walkway, the experience reminded me of the importance of adaptability and the joy of discovering new facets of a place. Tolu’s commitment to sustainability and her passion for sharing the beauty of Lagos left a lasting impression, reinforcing my belief in the power of responsible travel.
Though the Lekki Conservation Centre remains on my list, the day’s journey was a testament to the magic of embracing the unknown and the connections we make along the way.
