- Cape Saint Vincent - As the most south-westerly point in mainland Europe, this rugged and imposing cape has long been regarded as sacred ground. The ancient Greeks referred to it as the ‘Land of Serpents,’ while the Romans, interestingly, opted for a gentler name: Promontorium Sacrum (‘Holy Promontory’), which is the Latin root of the name ‘Sagres’ (from Sacrum). For the Romans, who were firmly rooted in terra firma, Cape St. Vincent was the ‘Edge of the World,’ a mystical place where the setting sun seemed to be swallowed by the vast, mysterious ocean. Even today, the sun’s descent can appear larger and more brilliant at Cape St. Vincent. This myth endured through the Middle Ages until Prince Henry the Navigator decided to dispel such notions, effectively ending the Age of Darkness.
- Sagres - Sagres reached its peak of global significance in the 15th century, largely due to Prince Henry the Navigator. He made Sagres his residence and the site of his navigation school. The school produced notable figures such as Fernao de Magalhaes (Magellan), Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Vasco da Gama, whose influence is still evident today. It was from nearby Belixe that the first caravels set sail, the very ships that initiated Portugal’s Age of Discoveries and helped shape the nation’s identity.
