- Cape Saint Vincent - Constructed in the 16th century, the fortress was designed to defend the coast from frequent Moorish pirate attacks. It is situated on the site of an earlier medieval convent, which once housed the remains of São Vicente (St Vincent).
This military structure has a polygonal layout, with an entrance crowned by the royal shield and originally featured a drawbridge. Inside the fortress, visitors can see the São Vicente lighthouse, built in 1904 and still operational today, along with the magnificent views of the cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean.
- Sagres - Lunch is typically enjoyed in Sagres, home to the Algarve’s most awe-inspiring landscape. The powerful natural forces at this southwestern tip of continental Europe help visitors understand why ancient settlers considered it sacred, how it inspired 15th-century Portuguese explorers to venture into the unknown, and how it has preserved its original stunning beauty.
Sagres’ history is shaped by its geographic location and the breathtaking landscape of the Sagres and Cape St. Vincent promontories. The dramatic 50-meter high headlands plunging into the sea have long intrigued and attracted the region’s successive settlers, as evidenced by various historical traces. The most significant figure in Sagres’ history was Henry the Navigator, who found inspiration here for his exploratory voyages, bringing fame to the region and leading to the establishment of Vila do Infante. Under his leadership, the area became a center of maritime activity, attracting cartographers, astronomers, and mariners, where caravels were constructed, and the exploration of Africa’s coast began.
- Lagos - Lagos is a vibrant and lively city, proud of its heritage and boasting a rich and well-preserved patrimony.
Lagos has a long-standing history connected to the sea. Its original name, Lacobriga, indicates that the first settlers of this port, around 2000 BC, were of Celtic origin. They were followed by the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians, but it was the Romans who brought growth and prosperity to the town. The Moors constructed walls around Lagos in the 10th century.
The 15th century marked a golden era for Lagos, with its active participation in the Age of Discoveries. Due to its port’s strategic location, directly opposite Africa, it became a major departure and arrival point for ships embarking on voyages to explore the continent.
