- Algar Seco - Located near Carvoeiro’s old town, Algar Seco is a hidden gem featuring a naturally carved pool that opens to the Atlantic. It also offers a thrilling jumping area from the sandstone cliffs into the ocean, with steps carved into the rocks for easy return to land. While exploring, observant visitors can spot fossil shells embedded in the cliff walls. This natural wonder has been sculpted over centuries by wind, rain, and waves, offering breathtaking views.
- A Boneca - Adjacent to Algar Seco, visitors can pass through “A Boneca,” a short tunnel carved into the cliff that opens into a small room with two windows overlooking the ocean.
This renowned rock formation, known as “The Doll,” resembles an inverted cone and looks like a doll from the sea, with the two windows resembling eyes. The view from this cave is truly spectacular, highlighting why Algar Seco is one of Portugal’s most beautiful areas.
- Carvoeiro Boardwalk - The Carvoeiro boardwalk is a delightful cliff-top walk leading to the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort. This brief ten-minute walk follows an elevated wooden path along the cliff tops, offering stunning views of the coastline. Informative signs along the way describe the local fauna and flora.
- Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao - The boardwalk concludes at the fort’s main entrance, where the chapel is located, both perched atop a hill overlooking Carvoeiro beach. This space served both religious and military purposes. The church existed before the defensive military structure was built in 1675, in the form of an irregular polygon, possibly where a watchtower once stood.
- Carvoeiro - From the fort, the descent begins, pausing at a viewpoint that overlooks the beach and old town. Here, visitors can admire typical Algarve architecture and capture photos.
Next, visitors reach the old town, where they typically have 30 minutes to explore independently, visit the beach, and shop for souvenirs.
Lunch follows at a traditional Portuguese restaurant near the old town.
- Statue of Sao Goncalo - Drive past the statue with an explanation about the protector of Lagos city.
- Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse - The cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland are among the Algarve’s most stunning natural wonders. This dramatic sandstone coastline features sea pillars, delicate rock arches, and hidden grottos, all sculpted by fierce winter storms. The headland is simply breathtaking.
- Lagos - Lagos is a vibrant and lively city, proud of its history and boasting a rich, well-preserved heritage.
Lagos has a long maritime history. Its original name, Lacobriga, indicates that the first settlers, around 2000 BC, were of Celtic origin. They were followed by the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians, but it was the Romans who brought growth and prosperity. The Moors fortified Lagos with walls in the 10th century.
The 15th century marked a golden era for Lagos, with its active role in the Age of Discoveries. Due to its strategic port location opposite Africa, it became a major departure and arrival point for ships exploring the continent.
- Statue of Infante Dom Henrique - Henry the Navigator established the school in Sagres, where navigators could enhance their sailing knowledge. He updated maps, invited renowned cartographers, navigators, geographers, and shipbuilders to compile information with news from returning sailors. He ensured each expedition learned from the previous one and encouraged the use of navigation instruments like the sea compass, astrolabe, and quadrant to determine latitude.
- Church of Santa Maria de Lagos - Enter and admire this simple 15th-century church, featuring a rectangular layout, single nave, and elevated main chapel, baptistery, and high choir. The high altar is painted in a striking manner, with vibrant colors and biblical scenes.
