• Archaeological Site of Sparta - Explore the ancient city of Sparta, where the Acropolis, the ancient Theater, and some Roman-era houses can be seen. Ancient Sparta was established along the Eurotas River in Laconia, southeast of the Peloponnese, and rose to prominence as a political-military power in Greece during the Archaic period (800 BC to 479 BC). It experienced decline after its victory in the Peloponnesian War against Athens and its allies, maintaining dominance until 371 BC, when it was defeated by the Thebans. By 362 BC, Sparta had lost its power, coinciding with the rise of the Kingdom of Macedonia, and was later conquered by the Romans. Visitors will have the chance to admire the statue of Leonidas, showcasing his full battle attire from the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, during the second Persian invasion of Greece, following their defeat at Marathon 10 years earlier. The tomb of Leonidas is also on display, where his remains were transported and buried in Sparta in 430 BC, 50 years after his death. Additionally, the statue of Lycurgus, the ancient Spartan legislator who established the military education system of Spartan society according to Apollo’s Oracle in Delphi, can be seen. The Museum of the Olive Tree and the Kaiada will also be visited, where official investigations since 1983 have revealed, through bone findings, that contrary to popular myth, no Spartan children with birth defects were executed there, but rather adult males and females, including traitors, criminals, and prisoners of war.
