Additional Information

Huayna Potosi (6,088 meters or 19,974 feet) stands out as one of the Cordillera Real’s most stunning peaks in Bolivia, renowned for its eternal ice caps and breathtaking panoramas, prominently observable from La Paz.

There’s plentiful information suggesting the mountain is easy to ascend; nevertheless, caution is imperative because while being ‘well-known’, all climbing activities carry inherent dangers. Acknowledging the significance of acclimatization is key to success on such endeavors.

The technical demands of this peak are relatively modest; in fact, Huayna Potosi ranks among the more approachable Bolivian mountains thanks to the well-developed support structure, including established base camps and designated advanced stations.

2days Huayna Potosi - Ramiro Ramirez - I did a tour to Huayna Potosi for 2 days with a great guide, Ramiro Ramirez. I couldn’t be more happy with the experience. Ramiro gave a lot of support both technical and mental! If you are not experienced with ice trekkings there are no issues since all explanation and equipment will be given to you

Highly recommended - From start to finish the staff were great. The reception at the tour office in lap Paz are really helpful to the point of flagging down a taxi for me when I finished. The guides were great paced and organised the trip by ability which is really helpful. It is inevitable the some will not make it but they try there hardest to ensure everyone is successful. Really happy I went with South Treks. The only suggestion I would make is that the waterproof clothing is updated. We were really unlucky on the second day and we did the hike in a thunder storm with very heavy rain. Our jackets did not keep all the rain out. Also it would be worth offering dry bags to put clothes and sleeping bags in as an optional extra should the customers look up the weather. Thanks for the trip I really enjoyed it :)

Unique experience - Hi, I did the 3-day-tour with the amazing guide Ramiro Ramirez (+59171297774). He is very experienced, motivating and at the same time super human and understanding. It was a super hard hike, but worth every step to the top. Ramiro knew my limits and pushed me just as far. I really enjoyed the whole experience and can recommend it to anyone who’s eager to climb the 6000 m! Good luck🌞

Great Experience - I used SouthTreks for the Pico Austria and the Huayna Potossi! Can’t say a bad thing about this agency: the guides have an excellent expertise (in particular: Roberto, Felix, Gonzalo, Javier…) which is needed because it can get quite dangerous! Great service for reasonable prices

Individual mountain tour - I did an individual six day combination package consisting of Pico Austria, pequeño Alpamayo and Huyana Potosí and had an incredible experience! From the whole organisation to the equipment and being out there with my guide Javier everything worked perfectly. The whole team with driver, guide and organization is super friendly and supports your ideas to a really fair price. Food is excellent, even as a vegetarian and I never felt unsafe even on the high peaks without a lot of previous experience! On more common routes like Huyana Potosí you even get the higher camp, which gives you a little advantage over other groups. Can highly recommend this crew!

Amazing but not safe - William is a great host of South Treks. I did the climb with Theo who is a fantastic guide. I struggled a lot with the altitude, vomited on the morning of ascent but was still able to summit. This is not an easy climb, it amazes me that ones can still summit despite lack of mountaineering experience. We did face terrible weather and at times it felt very unsafe. Of note my friend had to turn back with her guide. They proceeded to get lost in the dark and the blizzard and were very lucky to return safely after repelling ice walls and having no food, water, radio or PLB. This lack of organization from the guides made this extremely dangerous. If you have fitness, drive, tolerance of exposure and some mountaineering experience you should be fine on this hike (requires steep ice climbing and jumping crevasses). Anything less and you're doing so at your own risk as the safety is to Bolivian standards and no higher.

Very heavy trekking - I did Huayna potosi in 3 days with South Treks. It was one of the heaviest physical things I've ever done (I'm 32 male and sportive). I acclimatized a month at 3000-4500 before attempting. Two people from south treks told me that 90-95% of the people makes it to the top. This way I thought it would be easier than it actually was. Actually only about half of the 20 people from our camp made it to the top. Judging from that 50% would be a better estimate. I think they should be more transparant about the difficulty. Camps, transport and food were well arranged. But I was unhappy about one of my guides Ramiro. He was probably the most unkind guide I've had. I understand that hiking on a glacier comes with responsibilities and that requires a somewhat strict attitude. But he really took it too far. He got angry with me for not communicating during the hike but did a poor job with communicating himself at various moments. When I didn't know the road or struggled on a very steep path he got upset. We could barely have any pauses on the way to the top but got there too early when it was still dark. This was my first glacier hike and I found his expectations unreasonably high. On a more positive note he did let me change sleeping bags with him because the company gave me one for 1.60 people and I'm 1.85m.
