Highlights

Your day will begin when we pick you up from your hotel (if it is in the vicinity of La Fortuna or along the way to the river) and begin the 45 minute drive to the Balsa River. Along the way, your guide will point out any sites of interest and give you an introduction to the area and the river. Named after the Balsa tree, this river is divided in several sections. The section that you will be running is a class II-III (from a scale of I-VI) and it is 8 km (5 miles) long. This section is perfect for first time rafters, people with experience and families with children. It will give you the excitement of hitting white water while keeping the level of difficulty safe and fun.

Once we arrive at the river, you will have a chance to use the rest rooms and change rooms before you are provided with a safety vest, a helmet, a paddle, a safety speech and a practice. Once your guide is satisfied with your ability to paddle and react to the commands, the rafting begins. The river begins with the more challenging rapids and the real adrenaline and finishes with smaller rapids and pools where you will have the chance to see wildlife and jump in the water for a little swim. Half way down, you will take a fruit break on the side of the river and replenish your energy with fresh local pineapple, watermelon and other tropical fruit. Depending on the water level, the time spent on the water is 2-2.5 hours.

Your transportation will be waiting for you at the end of the class II-III section that we are running and will take you to have a delicious typical Costa Rican lunch at a local family run restaurant. After lunch, you will be driven back to your hotel some 35 minutes away. All in all, you will spend around 5 wonderful hours with us. Your tour will be small, personalized or private to give you great customer service and is designed to give back to the local community and to preserve the environment that allows us to do what we love.

Highlight of our trip - We had an amazing experience using this family owned company. Everything was just perfect! I researched the mayor rafting companies and choose Dinghy because their great reviews, I called ahead of time and spoke with Andres who kindly answered all my doubts. They picked us on time at our hotel and drove to us the river. Meanwhile he explained what we were going to do and was very patient answering my daughters questions. We were all a little scared since this was our first time doing water rafting. When we got to the river Andres explained to us all the commands and safety measures, then we went on the boat and practice several times until we all felt safe. We were placed in our positions and my younger daughter (10) was just next to Andres, he was extremely cautious with her and made sure she was safe during the whole trip, which let me enjoy the experience. We got to see different companies while rafting and most of them use several boats at the same time and looked kind of unsafe. I was very pleased to use a company Like Dignhy that cares for their costumers and got the time to actually learn your name and give you the best treatment. This was for sure the best experience we could have ever asked for! Thank you Andres and Diana!!!

Go with this rafting company, a unique experience and activity! - This was our first rafting experience and I am sooo glad we went with Dinghy Expeditions. We were picked up at our hotel on time by Andres and Piqui. We were not aware of Piqui, the rafting dog, but we were ok with this experience. This definitely was a first for us and made the entire day unique. Our group was small, which included another couple. This is our preference when we do activities and Andres was an excellent guide and instructor. On our way out to the river, we stopped at a local fruit stand where we were able to sample different fruits. Andres is very knowledgeable of the La Fortuna area and is great at informing visitors of many aspects of the area and the country. I, of course, had an absolute blast with rafting, I'm not sure if my husband could say the same, but after reviewing photos it looked like he enjoyed himself. This is definitely an activity to purchase photos for. Additionally, they are priced reasonably. On our way back into town, we stopped at a family owned Soda for lunch, which of course was delicious. If anybody is thinking about white water rafting go with Dinghy expeditions. This is a family run business and it is obvious that they love what they do and they love their country. Pura Vida!

Highlight of our vacation! - After researching the different outfitters in the Arenal area we knew we wanted to go with Ahndres and Diana as we really wanted a smaller, more personal tour and wanted to support a local family-run business. Are we glad we did! As this was our first time white water rafting, we decided to go with the half day Balsa trip rather than a full day trip. However, due to some unforeseen dam issues at the time of our trip, conditions there were not the best, so Ahndres offered an upgrade to the full day Sarapiqui river at no additional charge (class II-III). After about an hour drive, we arrived at the beautiful Sarapiqui river, which meanders thru primary rain forest. We had a fantastic day on the river! Ahndres knew these waters so well and provided very clear instructions and practice before we set out on the river, which really eased our minds. Safety was always top priority. For the most part, we enjoyed the river without other rafts around. At one point, we came across another tour, with 4-5 rafts and 20+ people and were so happy we had booked w Ahndres. Throughout the day, we learned a lot about Costa Rica from Ahndres, who loves to share his knowledge of his country and passion for conservation. On the way back, we stopped at a soda where we had the best food of the entire trip (try the fish!). On our way back, we asked Ahndres about coffee recommendations, so he made a stop at a coffee roaster in La Fortuna ("Down to Earth") where we purchased some really good coffee. An unforgettable day w Andres and his assistant (Luis?), filled w great conversation, lots of laughs, fabulous food, and gorgeous scenery!

Fun and Safe for the kids! - I first thought about booking reservations through the larger outfitters, but once I read the reviews for Dinghy, I decided that a smaller, more personal tour would be nice so I booked a half day for me and my two teenagers. I am so GLAD that I booked with Dinghy!! Ahndres and Rocky picked us up in a small jeep and drove about 1 hour to the Balsa River. The kids enjoyed the ride in the back of the jeep. We stopped by a store and sampled the small bananas and palm fruit. Once we got to the river, Ahndres taught the kids the safety rules while waiting for the water to be released. It was amazing watching how quickly the water level rose. Once we entered the raft, Ahndres made us practice over and over. He was very cognizant that the kids were a bit nervous. The first hour was excellent rapids. Ahndres always put safety first which allowed me to relax and enjoy the trip. I don't think the kids realized how much work was involved in rafting. As Ahndres said, "It's a sport!" Rocky, in his kayak taking pictures, pointed out a 2-toed and a 3-toed sloth. We were joined by other rafts on the river side to see bats and a very small blue and red frog that Rocky found. We also saw a beautiful baby spectacle owl. We had a brief stop to eat fruit and relax. The other tour groups stopped also with the rafts full of people (20+ in the group). I was happy that we had the personal attention from Ahndres & Rocky. The second part of the trip was easy and calm. The drive back was shorter since we were closer to town. On the drive back, we stopped by a soda and had wonderful fruit drinks and lunch. I absolutely recommend them!

Amazing Day on the River - We can't say enough good things about this trip. From the pick up at our hotel, the focus on safety, the expert navigation, the colorful backstories, the Costa Rican lunch and most of all the incredible exhilarating fun - it was all amazing. If you want to be treated like cattle and herded down the river with 20 other boats - choose the other guys - if you want to have a highly personalized trip with amazing people, choose Dinghy!

Fantastic WWR trip on the only boat with a dog on board: highly recommended - We took the half day Balsa River trip in December 2018 and had a great time. For my wife and 9yo daughter this was a first-time rafting experience. Andres and members of the team were great, and made for an exciting, safe, very enjoyable time. The trip down to the river was fun with a stop to pick up fruit (and a great meal at a local restaurant on the return trip). The river was a good mix of the more turbulent early part, and a more lazy second part which gave the chance to concentrate on the scenery and the nature - saw quite a few iguanas and a close-up sloth. Andres and the rest of the team were really personable and friendly, and their enthusiasm was infectious. We were only 4 (humans) on the boat (we three and Andres), which was great (some of the boats had many more on board), plus the kayaking "front rider" (Pablo) who was there to pick out the path down the rapids, take photos, as well as to pull entertaining stunts on his playboat. And, because Andres' dog Pique has taken a liking to WWR, he came along too, making us most definitely the only boat on the river that day with a rafting dog. Highly recommended all in all. Communication was great before and after the trip. Pictures were great and available for only $20. Pura vida!
