Chasing Waterfalls and Hot Springs in La Fortuna
When the waves take a break, I seek out new adventures. This time, it was the allure of La Fortuna’s waterfall and hot springs that called to me. Join me as I dive into the refreshing waters and soak in the natural beauty of Costa Rica.
Descending into the Jungle
The day began with a descent into the lush jungle surrounding the La Fortuna Waterfall. The trek down the long staircase was a journey in itself, with each step taking us deeper into the vibrant green canopy. The air was thick with humidity, and the anticipation of the cool waters below kept us moving. As a surfer, I’m no stranger to the ocean’s embrace, but the waterfall’s pool offered a different kind of refreshment. The water was crisp and invigorating, a perfect antidote to the tropical heat.
The waterfall itself was a sight to behold, a 70-meter cascade that seemed to pour directly from the heavens. We spent time exploring the two swimming areas, each offering its own unique perspective of the falls. The facilities were a pleasant surprise, with changing rooms, a restaurant, and even a frog exhibit adding to the experience. It was a perfect start to the day, setting the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.
Hiking the Arenal Volcano
Next on the itinerary was a hike around the base of the iconic Arenal Volcano. We opted for the more challenging blue trail, a decision that promised both adventure and a test of endurance. The trail was rugged, with uneven footing and steep steps that demanded attention. As we climbed, the mist rolled in, shrouding the peak in mystery and adding an element of intrigue to the journey.
Reaching the top, we were greeted by a picnic area where we enjoyed a hearty lunch. The pork chop, accompanied by rice, beans, and veggies, was a satisfying reward after the climb. The descent via the gray trail was a welcome relief, offering a gentler path back down. The hike was a reminder of the raw beauty and power of nature, a theme that resonates deeply with my love for the ocean and its ever-changing moods.
Soaking in the Hot Springs
The final leg of the tour offered a choice between hanging bridges and hot springs. Given the day’s heat, the allure of the springs was irresistible. Nestled in the forest, the natural hot river provided a soothing end to the day’s adventures. The water was more warm than hot, a gentle embrace that eased the muscles and calmed the mind.
The experience was enhanced by the unique volcanic scrub provided by the guides. As I lay still in the water, tiny fish nibbled at my skin, a natural exfoliation that added a touch of whimsy to the soak. The lack of formal facilities at the river was a minor inconvenience, but the presence of our guide ensured a smooth experience.
Reflecting on the day, the tour was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. It was a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle, chasing waves and exploring the wonders of Central America. If you find yourself with a day to spare in La Fortuna, this experience is not to be missed. La Fortuna Adventure
