During this cultural journey, we’ll delve into the lore of Kawara—Japan’s iconic roofing tiles. These tiles are often adorned with the intimidating visages of demons and mythical creatures, serving as guardians against malevolent forces and the elements atop traditional Japanese structures for centuries. I’ll guide you through crafting your own miniature Onigawara tile, complete with a demon’s countenance. Engage in a hands-on workshop to create your own piece. Following the creation of your Onigawara, it will be fired in a kiln at our workshop. Despite the modernization of tile production in Japan, here’s your chance to craft a demon tile using time-honored techniques.

Crafting an Onigawara is typically challenging,
but with my specialized method,

Even those with less dexterity,
including children and the less crafty,
can successfully create their own ONI.

Embark on a unique adventure to forge your own demon from the ground up—a truly unparalleled experience.

Please note:
This activity involves working with clay, so attire that can withstand a bit of mess is recommended.

Great teacher, fun, with clear instructions. - From the moment of pickup I felt welcomed. Yu was a patient teacher and gave clear and simple step by step instructions. The workshop is simple and honest making the whole experience feel authentic to Kyoto. Ultimately, I was able to make both a wonderful Onigawara, and some amazing memories.

Great creative activity ! - We had a fun time making onigawara! It was a creative and fun way to spend a few hours. It was a nice small group activity and was a nice break from walking everywhere. Once your creatures are done, it takes several days to bake and cure. They ship the pottery to your homes after that is done, so bring some cash to pay for shipping. Would highly recommend doing this! Would definitely do it again!

Highlight of our trip to Japan - Amazing hands-on experience and family memories that will last a lifetime. The monsters we created will become family heirlooms and will forever remind us of our trip. Would recommend this activity over any sightseeing option without hesitation

Great experience! - It was an amazing class. We had a nice chat about Onigawara and Yuya's work while doing our own. Yuya was so patient and kind when he explained us each step. I have never done pottery before and am so happy how mine turned out. It is absolutely a highlight of my travel to Japan and I can only recommend it.

Great experience that was a lot of fun. - This was a wonderful class. Youya met us at the station with warm water which was very thoughtful since we were damp to the bone. He took us to his art studio and we made our own Onigawara sculptures. He was very charismatic and so patient. He explained what the Onigawara were and how he learned his craft from his master. It was a fantastic cultural experience. My whole family (especially my husband) thoroughly enjoyed this class and we all managed to create our own unique Onigawara. We all highly recommend this class.

Special & Fun Class! - Our instructor, Yuya, was outstanding! He hosted the class in his and his wife’s workshop. It was a treat to see their impressive work as professional artists and learn how to make onigawara ourselves. Yuya did a great job explaining each step, and it was a delight to learn from him! This was a standout experience from our trip to Japan. We highly recommend this to anyone traveling alone or with friends and family!
