- Sanzen-in Temple - Ohara Sanzenin Temple, established 1,200 years ago by Saicho, a prominent Buddhist ambassador, has been overseen by the prince and imperial family members for generations. Visitors can admire numerous valuable temple treasures and cultural assets, including the Sanzonzo statue, a designated National Treasure. The temple grounds feature two renowned gardens, “Shuheki-en” and “Yusei-en,” described by a famous novelist as “jewels of the Orient.” The tranquil scenery is captivating throughout the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and a snowy landscape in winter. The charming Jizo (stone statues) scattered throughout the moss-covered gardens add a soothing touch.
- Shorin-in Temple - Shorinin Temple, built 1,000 years ago, is notable for being the site where Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, conducted the Ohara Mondo, discussing and answering questions about the Pure Land Nembutsu doctrine with learned priests. It is also recognized as the birthplace of Buddhist music, Shomyo. Shomyo is ceremonial music that incorporates rhythms and intonations into Buddhist scriptures to convey teachings, and is considered the origin of later Japanese songs. As you enter the main hall, the echoes of Shomyo create an immersive Buddhist atmosphere.
- Hosen-in - Hosenin’s main attraction is its framed garden, where visitors view the garden through the pillars and Kamoi gate as if it were a framed picture. The 700-year-old pine trees and bamboo grove visible from inside the room are as picturesque as a framed painting, and the elegant sound of the suikinkutsu (water harp) draws many visitors. Guests can enjoy the beautiful garden while savoring matcha green tea and traditional sweets.
- Jakko-ji Temple - Jakkoin Temple, established by Prince Shotoku 1,500 years ago, is renowned as a nunnery where women have served as chief priests for generations. The temple grounds exude a quiet and serene atmosphere, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall so beautiful they were immortalized in a waka poem in the Tale of the Heike. Noblemen and ascetic practitioners historically visited Jakkoin for retreats, drawn by its tranquil and relaxing environment.
