Tenryuji was constructed in 1339 by the ruling shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Takauji dedicated the temple to Emperor Go-Daigo, who had recently passed away. The two notable historical figures were once allies until Takauji opposed the emperor in a power struggle over Japan. By building the temple, Takauji aimed to appease the former emperor’s spirit.
