[Sanzen-in Temple] is situated in Ohara, Luobei, Kyoto. It is one of the three temples of the Tiantai Sect. The expansive temple grounds feature towering ancient trees, lush moss, babbling streams, cherry blossoms in April, azaleas in May, hydrangeas in July, and vibrant autumn leaves. The natural beauty is captivating throughout the year. The two ponds, designed by Kanamori Munakazu, along with the spring-style gardens “Jubi Garden” and “Youqing Garden,” offer the perfect spots to appreciate Sanzen-in’s scenery in all four seasons. The main wooden statue of Amitabha Buddha and the accompanying statues on either side are national cultural treasures.

- Arashiyama - Arashiyama (approximately 2 hours of free time)
The Arashiyama area is divided into Arashiyama and Sagano. This region boasts not only rich cultural attractions but also natural landscapes that change with the seasons and retro trains. It is home to numerous ancient temples and shrines, with Tenryuji Temple being one of the world’s most beautiful sites. A heritage-level monument, it features a famous bamboo forest trail from Nonomiya Shrine to Okochi Sanso. As a popular destination for cherry blossom and maple viewing, Arashiyama draws many visitors each spring and autumn. The Sagano Train is often in high demand, but it is peaceful in winter and summer, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility. The Arashiyama area is filled with well-established restaurants, Japanese confectionery shops, and charming grocery stores. Visitors can also rent kimonos and rickshaws, making it a wonderful place to relax.

Sagano Romantic Train - The Sagano Train (recommended route: Sagano-Kameoka Station-Sagano)

Bamboo Forest Street - Sagano Bamboo Forest is located in Arashiyama. The bamboo forest trail is approximately 500 meters long. You can visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest by walking through Nonomiya Shrine and towards Okouchi Villa.
As you stroll through the bamboo forest, you can hear the natural sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo leaves. This sound has been recognized as one of Japan’s 100 most worth preserving.
This is also the location where Ang Lee filmed “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. The Tenryuji Temple along the trail features a stunning Japanese garden.
During the Arashiyama Lantern Festival every December, the bamboo forest and Togetsukyo Bridge are illuminated with dazzling lights, creating a unique winter spectacle.
- Arashiyama Station Hannari Hokkori Square - Arashiyama Station Foot Bath Hot Spring. In the HANNARI-HOKKORI Plaza, there is a Japanese-style footbath located at Arashiden Arashiyama Station. The footbath is inspired by JR Kyushu Yufuin Station. You can purchase seasonal desserts at the nearby store and enjoy them while relaxing in the footbath. Let the water from Arashiyama Hot Spring fully relieve your fatigue after a walk.
