Additional Information

The bento box is a classic element of Japanese tradition. It’s often considered the ideal meal: each partition of the box could hold an egg roll, rice, pickled veggies, breaded chicken, and even a savory miso soup. The term ‘bento’ originates from an older Japanese word that means ‘convenient’, and this compact meal solution undoubtedly fits the bill. In this cooking class that spans 3 hours, located in the heart of Kyoto, you will learn how to prepare a bento box meal. Expert chefs lead the demonstration before handing the reins to you. The best part? You get to enjoy the fruits of your labor when the cooking is done.

Fun cooking class - My husband and I took this fun class with 9 other people and enjoyed it very much. The 3 instructors spoke English well and were relaxed and patient while describing and demonstrating how to make each item in the bento box. We all got hands on experience making an omelet, teriyaki chicken, spinach/sesame salad, tempura shrimp & vegetables and a sushi roll. Then we got to eat it all for lunch - yum! We definitely have a newfound appreciation for the amount of work that goes into a bento box, especially considering we didn't have to chop everything up as that was all done for us in advance. We would recommend this class as it was a fun way to spend 3 hours and learn a little about Japanese culture and food.

Experience Japan's culinary delights - A big THANK YOU for this great course. I learned a lot about Japanese food, such as different soy sauces and miso pastes, the secrets of a good dashi broth and how important the aesthetics of the presentation are. Now I also know how to make a delicious tamagoyaki and what dried bonito looks like in one piece. It was delicious too - I can recommend it 100%.

Excellent cooking class, must do 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - Excellent cooking class, a must do during your trip to Japan. Great teachers, very good value for money, you enjoy your own bento box at the end of the course (large quantities) Recipes that you can make at home. We fell in love with the omelette roll and we bought the pan.

For Anyone Who Loves to Cook - This cooking class was so much fun! My husband and I try and do cooking classes with each trip we take and this was one of the best! You make so many different types of food during this class and have a delicious and filling lunch once it is complete. Learning how to do tempura and roll your own sushi are just so of the highlights. If you love to cook, this experience is definitely for you. The instructors are very helpful and it is so easy to follow the recipes. You are given copies of the recipes to take home with you as well!

Excellent Cooking Class with Vegetarian Options - This class is very organized and you get to cook and eat a wide variety of Japanese foods. There were three people teaching our group of 10 and all spoke very good English and were friendly. We requested ahead of time to have vegan dishes and they were very responsive to our needs during the class. They even asked if dashi (fish based broth) was okay. Overall a wonderful experience.

Perfect for the experienced cook and non-cook - A fantastic experience for me (an experienced cook) and my husband (a non-cook). We were very lucky to have a class to ourselves and learnt some lovely tricks from the chef, who was calm, gentle and absolutely delightful. Highly recommended.

Cooking tips from their grandmothers! - Both instructors were excellent and even shared their grandmothers techniques (like washing vegetables in soy sauce). They were also very easy to understand - cooking was lots of fun. We made several dishes that we will make again at home.
