It is safeguarded by the thirteen peaks of the Aravali Range. The fort’s perimeter walls stretch 22 miles (36 km) with frontal walls 15 feet wide. Kumbhalgarh boasts seven fortified gateways and houses over 360 temples, including 300 ancient Jain temples and the rest Hindu. It features the second longest wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. From the palace’s summit, one can enjoy expansive views of the Aravalli Range. According to local legend, Rana Kumbha, the Maharana of Kumbhalgarh, faced repeated failures in constructing the fort wall. A spiritual advisor suggested that a voluntary human sacrifice would overcome the obstacle. The temple was to be erected where the head fell, and the wall and fort where the body lay. After some time, a pilgrim volunteered and was ritually sacrificed. Today, the main gate of the fortress, Hanuman Pol, includes a shrine and temple to honor this significant sacrifice.
