Highlights
  • Semenggoh Nature Reserve - For over 20 years, the wardens here trained young orangutans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild. The success of this programme has left the surrounding forest reserve with a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orang utans, who are now breeding in the wild. The programme has been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre, but Semenggoh is still home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orang utans and their babies. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but frequently come back to the Centre for a free meal. If it is the fruiting season in the forest, some or even all of them may not come to feed. This in itself is a good sign and another step on the way to full rehabilitation.

The guide was extremely knowledgeable about orangutans in general and those at Semenggoh. - The driver/guide was so knowledgeable about orangutans in general, as well as the orangutans specifically at Semenggoh. I learnt so much from the guide about orangutans that I was not aware of. Also, the guide showed me local plants eg pitcher plants and peppercorn plants and told me about these too. Therefore, he was knowledgeable on a lot of different topics. He was very friendly and sent me several WhatsApp messages on the way back to the hotel containing links of other things to visit in Kuching, and restaurant information. He drove safely and made the visit to Semenggoh extremely enjoyable.

Nice experience - Orangutan may or may not show up depending on the season. I was lucky to see three of them. You have to walk in the swamp area, so bring a pair of wet-proof walking shoes.

Amazing morning spent with the Orangutans - The whole morning was amazing. We saw 4 orangutans & Ganya one of the males followed us along the path & we were able to see him up close to us. We also saw Seduku the Mother of Ganya resting in a low branch near the road. She is 52 years old. I highly recommend this tour. Our guide Smigeo was amazing & even took us to a market afterwards to show us the local food. The whole tour was an absolute highlight & we managed to take amazing photos & videos

Fully paid , no one showed up - I confirmed as requested the day before. I was asked to be ready on the lobby at 7:45 for 8:00 am pick up. I was there. No one showed. I called the tour operator and the woman I spoke to told me she was going to check and I was going to get a call back from operations. Never got a call. I called again 6 times after but no one answered anymore. I came to Borneo for a day to see the orangutan and missed out because of this bad partner who simply didn’t deliver the prepaid service. Didn’t even call me back.
