Initially a Hindu temple, later becoming a Buddhist complex, Angkor Wat in Cambodia is the largest religious monument globally. Constructed by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura (now Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, it served as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Unlike previous kings who followed Shaivism, Angkor Wat was dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it has continuously been a significant religious center since its inception. The temple exemplifies the pinnacle of classical Khmer architecture and is a national symbol of Cambodia, even appearing on its flag.
- Ta Prohm - Known as Taprom (The Ancestor Brahma, Jungle Temple), Ta Prohm is enveloped in dense jungle, creating an ethereal and romantic atmosphere. Fig, banyan, and kapok trees extend their massive roots over the stones, separating walls and terraces, while their branches and leaves form a canopy over the structures. Tree trunks twist among stone pillars.
- Angkor Thom - On the left side of the moat, 54 ‘devas’ (guardian gods) pull the head of the snake ‘Shesha,’ while on the right side, 54 ‘asuras’ (demon gods) pull the snake’s tail in the opposite direction. The Bayon temple, with over 200 large faces carved on its 54 towers, gives this temple its majestic character. The bas-reliefs depict everyday life scenes such as markets, fishing, festivals with cockfights and jugglers, as well as historical scenes with battles and processions. Baphoun, built in the mid-11th century (1060) by King Udayadityavarman II, is dedicated to Shiva (Hindu). Phimean Akas, constructed in the late 10th century to the early 11th century by King Jayavamen V and Udayadityavarman I, is also dedicated to Hinduism. The site includes the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King.
