Khmer King Rajendravarman II ascended to the throne at a young age in 944 CE. One of his mentors, Yajnavaraha, was granted permission to construct a temple complex in a rural area on the outskirts of the capital, Yashodharapura. This area was later named ‘Ishwarapura,’ meaning ‘the city of Ishwara.’

The smaller size of the temple was intentional, emphasizing aesthetic perfection. The durability of the stone has allowed the temple to maintain its sharpness and finish, even after more than 1,000 years of natural erosion.
