- Psar Chaa - Old Market - Psar Chaa - or ‘old market’ - is often dismissed as a tourist market thanks to the rows of clothes and souvenir stalls that line the outside. However, the interior is a bustling working market frequented by Siem Reap’s best chefs, and where some of the best ingredients in town can be found.
- Siem Reap - Street 60 is the sort of place few visitors discover. It’s a night market for local food, outside the centre and far from the heavily-trod tourist areas. Here we’ll discover deep-fried insects and frogs, authentic grilled skewers, and ‘ban chav’ savoury crepes.
Many of the restaurants in Siem Reap are quite heavily ‘westernised’ and it can be difficult to know where to go for an authentic taste of life here. Cambodian cuisine is the least-understood of Asian cuisines by westerners and probably the least-tasted outside of the Kingdom of Wonder. While Thai and Vietnamese food is widely recognised, Khmer food is mostly a mystery to visitors.
Heavily influenced by locally-sourced ingredients like freshwater fish from the Tonle Sap, sugar cane and coconut, Khmer cuisine is a little less fiery than other south east Asian national cuisines. It has its share of surprises too, and the Khmer script, while beautiful, can make menus difficult to navigate!
