Additional Information

On this tour, you will experience Bonaire’s Donkey Sanctuary - a habitat created to rescue donkeys needing extra care, food and water. You will interact with the donkeys throughout the drive as they regularly ‘say hello’ and attempt to put their noses through the car window! You can also purchase a few carrots at the sanctuary to feed a few lucky donkeys while on your visit.
At the sanctuary, you will also see a few other things. The Special Care Unit is an area of the sanctuary where we will learn about the services provided to bring a distressed donkey back to health. You can also visit the garden, where you will see local plants, tortoises, and iguanas.

Climbing the watchtower will give you a great view of the entire sanctuary and an excellent photo opportunity. We’ll round out our visit with a refreshing drink from the terrace, where you can spot some beautiful pink flamingos over the salt lake.

Great visit to Bonaire Donkey sanctuary - We had a great tour provided by the Shekhinah team, with our driver Nigel proving to be very knowledgeable about the sanctuary. Driving through the reserve and knowing there were around 800 of the donkeys to see was such fun, especially being able to feed them. As you can see by the pictures, the donkeys are so happy, they smile! This was an independent tour arranged prior to our P&O cruise and we were picked up at the cruise terminal. All communication was efficient, so wholeheartedly recommend it.

Animal lovers will thoroughly enjoy - If you are an animal lover, this is for you. We loved our drive through the sanctuary and it was great fun when all the donkeys gathered around at feeding time. It was fun to see the babies as well. My wife and I both highly recommend.

One of our favorite tours ever! - We loved this tour! Our guide was patient and soft-spoken. The donkeys! Such gentle animals that for centuries were exploited and abused. Then they were abandoned. This sanctuary was a wonderful thing to see. We took cut apples with us and the donkeys came right to us to take them. We keep talking about this tour; it was such a highlight for us.

A must see on Bonaire - LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. This was our 4th vacation to Bonaire and we always stop here. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into keeping these gentle creatures safe and happy. We arrived at feeding time-what a good time we had watching the donkeys follow the food truck. My hubby and I smiled the entire trip around the sanctuary in our little pickup truck. I have no problem paying the small entrance fee and supporting the effort of the sanctuary to keep these guys safe.

Best tour ever! - Donkeys were AWES9ME!!! Guide was patient, but new to the area so this was his first time to the sanctuary. I loved every second of the tour. Donkeys were friendly, gentle, cuddly, and looking for treats. Gift shop was well stocked. If you love donkeys, this is the tour for you!

Amazing Donkey experience - Was a amazing experience.. First our guide was super informative. Was at the ship early. Information about the pickup was right on. The Donkey sanctuary was quite the experience.. was way bigger and more hands on. They truly do amazing work. Would add one thing to the experience and thats to stop and bring some carrots to feed the donkeys. They are so gentle.

Fabulous tour and tour guide! - This was a very fun tour and everything promised was delivered in abundance. I was picked up promptly at the appointed time by the driver and taken to the donkey sanctuary. As we traveled he explained how the donkeys came to be on the island, why they run loose, and the damage they cause to the environment. When we got to the sanctuary the rescue and care program was explained and then we drove through the main part of the sanctuary where the healthy donkeys roam freely over many acres. Many of them approach the vehicle for food, and if you bring some you are allowed to feed them. I definitely regretted deciding not to bring something for them with me. At the end we saw the pens where the senior and special needs donkeys are kept, and even saw some flamingos and tortoises being housed there due to their special needs. There is a small gift shop to help support the work with the donkeys, but there is no pressure to even go in or buy anything. Don spoke amazingly good English and was very patient in answering all of my questions, not only about the donkeys, but also about life on Bonaire. I have no negative things to say about this experience at all.

A short but interesting tour. - While the tour was far shorter than advertised, we enjoyed the donkey sanctuary. The new-born donkeys were one of the highlights of the trip.

Sanctuary was interesting but tour was WAY too expensive - Learning the history of donkeys on Bonaire. I enjoyed the newborns and the donkey who kept pace with our van (I learned later he was hoping for food).
