Casimir the Restorer established the Benedictine abbey of Saints Peter and Paul in Tyniec in 1044. The Benedictines draw their lineage from Saint Benedict of Nursia who, in his early years, chose the life of a hermit. After a period of isolation, he became the leader of a community of monks near his dwelling. However, the monks refused to adhere to his rules and even tried to kill him with poison. Luckily, the poisoned chalice broke when St. Benedict blessed it. The saint abandoned that monastery and went on to establish another one atop Monte Cassino, which, despite numerous destructions, remains to this day.
