- Kosciuszko’s Mound (Kopiec Kosciuszki) - This mound in Krakow, one of five in the city, was constructed to honor Tadeusz Kościuszko, a revered patriot and leader of the national uprising.
- Monastery of the Norbertan Sisters - Resembling a fortress, this grand monastery, established in the 12th century, has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. It is closely linked to Krakow’s traditions, including the annual Emmaus festival celebrated on Easter Monday and the Lajkonik procession, a key symbol of Krakow, which begins here every June.
- Wawel Royal Castle - Perched on a limestone hill above the Vistula River, this former power center is steeped in legend and history, serving as a princely, episcopal, and royal hub. Wawel is a complex of castle and sacred buildings, symbolizing the city and housing a museum with Poland’s most treasured cultural artifacts. Look closely to spot the iconic Wawel dragon, breathing fire for spectators.
- Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology - The museum’s modern architecture, with its wave-like roof, is best appreciated from the river, echoing the Vistula’s flowing waters.
- Church on the Rock (Kosciol na Skalce) - This baroque church, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Stanislaus, stands on a small hill of white Jurassic limestone by the Vistula River. It serves as a national pantheon, housing the remains of notable artists and a library with invaluable documents and books.
- Square of Ghettos Heroes - After exploring the city’s highlights, visit Ghetto Heroes Square, formerly Plac Zgody, the heart of the Kraków ghetto, now a site of remembrance.
- Plaszow Concentration Camp - Established by Nazi German occupiers in October 1942 on two Jewish cemeteries in Krakow, Plaszow began as a forced-labor camp for Jews from the Krakow ghetto. By July 1943, it included a penal-labor section for Poles. In January 1944, it became a concentration camp and later a transit camp for Hungarian Jews en route to Auschwitz. Over 35,000 people were imprisoned here, with around 6,000 murdered. Today, mass graves and memorials mark the camp’s landscape. On a guided tour, an expert guide will reconstruct the camp’s history from its remnants: the Grey House, the pre-burial hall ruins, traces of Jewish cemeteries, the roll-call square, and paths once paved with gravestone fragments.
- Plaszow Concentration Camp - Reflect at significant memorials, including the Monument of Torn-Out Hearts, and learn about the camp’s organization into living, hospital, administrative, and industrial sections. Oskar Schindler’s story is integral to Plaszow’s history. Through his enamelware business, he secured work permits for Jewish prisoners registered at Plaszow, protecting them from further deportations. Later, he arranged their transfer to his wartime factory in Brunnlitz, saving over a thousand lives. His heroic actions are an inseparable part of the narrative shared here.
