- Podziemna Nowa Huta - Muzeum Krakowa - The Nowa Huta tour from Krakow starts with a visit to the underground museum of Nowa Huta, situated in a former Cold War shelter. Visitors will experience the everyday life under communism through authentic interiors, propaganda exhibits, household items, and personal narratives from the socialist era.
This engaging museum visit offers vital insights into why Nowa Huta was established, how residents lived, and how ideology influenced daily life in post-war Poland.
- Nowa Huta - Following the museum visit, the tour continues on foot through the center of Nowa Huta. The guide elaborates on the urban design principles of this planned socialist city — featuring wide avenues, symmetrical housing blocks, grand squares, and meticulously designed public areas.
This segment of the Krakow communist tour emphasizes how ideology impacted architecture, city planning, and community life, while also showcasing the district’s transformation since the end of communism.
- Nowa Huta Cultural Centre - As the tour progresses through the district, participants will pass the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre — a significant institution that once advanced socialist values through art, theatre, and music. The guide discusses its historical significance and its current role as a cultural center for the local community.
- Krakow - A visit to Nowa Huta is incomplete without sampling everyday food from the communist era. The tour includes a stop at a local venue to taste zapiekanka, Poland’s famous open-faced toasted baguette, followed by a shot of traditional Polish vodka in an authentic communist-style bar.
This brief stop adds a social and cultural dimension to the tour, illustrating how food and drink were integral to daily life in socialist Poland.
- Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland - The tour concludes at the impressive Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland, also known as Arka Pana (The Ark of the Lord). Constructed despite strong opposition from communist authorities, this church became a powerful emblem of resistance, faith, and community unity.
The guide explains the crucial role of religion in Nowa Huta’s history and why this church represents one of the most significant chapters in Krakow’s modern history.

On this trip, you will step into the rich communist heritage of the Nowa Huta neighborhood in Krakow. The Soviets projected it as an ideal communist city, but it grew into a staunchly anti-communist region and played a crucial role in the Solidarity movement.
Our journey will take us to the vast Central Square (Plac Centralny), the signature feature of the neighborhood. Conceived just after the end of WWII, the square and the areas around it form a collective exhibit of diverse architectural designs and philosophies.
We will witness the place where once a gigantic statue of Lenin stood and then indulge in a shot of vodka at a local tavern, reminiscent of the old communist days.
Additionally, we’re going to take a tour of an enormous church - the Lord’s Ark, built entirely manually by local denizens. It stands as a symbol of the prolonged struggle for freedom and democratic rights.
By the conclusion of the trip, you will have an enhanced understanding of Poland’s communist past.
