It is home to many endemic species of the Western Ghats. The sanctuary was designed by the esteemed ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali. The Bombay Natural History Society has recorded 253 species in Thattekkad. This bird sanctuary, situated on a 25 sq. km peninsular area, is adorned with deciduous forests and plantations of rosewood, teak, and more.

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, also referred to as the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is among the most diverse bird habitats in peninsular India, rivaled only by the Eastern Himalayas. A visit to this sanctuary promises a delightful experience for bird enthusiasts, with over 300 species inhabiting a compact area of 25 square kilometers. Some of the rarely observed species at Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary include the Mottled Wood Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Indian Pitta, Sri Lanka Bay Owl, White-bellied Woodpecker, Malabar Trogon, and Black Baza. The sanctuary is also home to a significant number of endemic species found in the Western Ghats. Notable among them are the Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Malabar Barbet, Malabar Parakeet, Flame-Throated Bulbul, Malabar Woodshrike, Crimson-backed Sunbird, Nilgiri Flowerpecker, White-bellied Treepie, Rufous Babbler, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon, and Grey-headed Bulbul.
