• Chinese Fishing Nets - Known locally as Cheena vala, these stationary lift nets are a distinctive feature in India. They are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as Chinese fishing nets in India, the formal term is shore-operated lift nets. These impressive structures extend horizontal nets over 20 meters wide, supported by mechanical contraptions. Each setup stands at least 10 meters tall, featuring a cantilever with a net suspended over the water and large stones as counterweights, operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although prevalent in coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they attract tourists. This fishing method is rare in India and almost exclusive to this region, introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century. One interpretation of the name Kochi is ‘co-chin,’ meaning like China.

• Church of Saint Francis - St. Francis Church, located in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, was originally built in 1503 and is one of the oldest European churches in India. It holds significant historical value as a silent witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 during his third visit to India. Initially buried in this church, his remains were moved to Lisbon after fourteen years.

• Dutch Cemetery - The Dutch Cemetery is a notable site in Fort Kochi, renowned for its imperial residents from centuries ago who left their homelands to expand their empires. Consecrated in 1724, it is currently managed by the Church of South India and is surrounded by intriguing stories.

• Indo-Portuguese Museum - The Indo-Portuguese Museum is located in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India.

• Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - Situated in Fort Kochi, the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of the eight Basilicas in Kerala. Recognized as a heritage structure, it is one of the most exquisite and impressive churches in India, attracting tourists year-round.

• Dhoby Khana Public Laundry - The historic Dhobi Khana public laundry, located near Veli Ground in Fort Kochi, is set for modernization. The Vannar community leaders, who manage the laundry, have sought assistance from the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) to establish modern facilities for washing and drying clothes. Established by the Vannar community from Tamil Nadu during the Dutch period, the laundry still employs traditional methods of hand washing, open-air drying, and ironing. Approximately 45 washermen work here. The Vannar Sangham’s latest initiative aims to attract young community members to this traditional occupation and preserve it.

• Maritime Museum Kochi - This museum explores India’s naval history, showcasing warship models, artillery, and uniforms.

• Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple - Also known as Gosripuram, Cochin Tirumala Devaswom is the largest and most significant socio-religious institution for the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins of Kerala, India. Located in Cherlai, Mattancherry, Cochin, it is one of the earliest GSB settlements in Kerala. Established in the late 16th century, the temple’s history is closely linked with the GSBs in Kerala and its Venkateswara idol.

• Jain Temple - A prominent Jain worship site, famous for its daily pigeon show and feeding at noon.

• Mattancherry Palace - Known as the Dutch Palace, the Mattancherry Palace is a Portuguese palace in Mattancherry, Kochi, Kerala. It features Kerala murals depicting portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi and is on the “tentative list” of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

• Paradesi Synagogue - The Paradesi Synagogue, located in Kochi, Kerala, South India, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Built in 1568, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people, or Cochin Jewish community, in the Kingdom of Cochin.
