Experience the lively Chamayavilakku Festival at the Kottankulangara Sri Bhagavathy Temple in Chavara, Kollam, Kerala. This distinctive two-day celebration features men donning female attire to carry traditional lamps in a procession as an offering to the goddess.
Join the hundreds of men dressed as women who line up before the deity. As part of the main ritual, these cross-dressed men carry traditional five-wick lamps to seek the Goddess’s blessings. They participate in a ceremonial procession, with rituals continuing until midnight on both days.
The festival begins at 3 a.m. with the deity’s procession from Kunjalummoodu, while devotees stand in long lines from the temple gate with lamps for the ceremonial arrival. Following the ritualistic bath (aarattu) in the temple pond, the deity rests in a canopy made of coconut palm leaves (kurutholapanthal) set up in the temple courtyard. This marks the end of the ritual, and the festival is celebrated with equal significance on both days.
