From Waves to Waterways: A Surfer’s Journey Through Kerala’s Backwaters
When the waves of Central America take a backseat, the tranquil backwaters of Kerala beckon. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a punting boat and embark on a serene journey through lush landscapes and vibrant villages.
Setting Sail on the Serene Backwaters
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun in some of the most beautiful coastal spots in Central America. But when I heard about the Kerala Backwater Cruise in Kochi, I knew I had to trade my surfboard for a punting boat, at least for a day. The promise of gliding through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant wildlife, was too tempting to resist.
The day began with a comfortable ride from our homestay to the village of Vaikom. The air-conditioned minibus was a welcome change from the salty breeze of the ocean, and it gave me a chance to relax and anticipate the adventure ahead. Our guide, Shijas, greeted us with a warm smile and a detailed itinerary, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.
A Journey Through Nature’s Canvas
Once aboard the non-motorized houseboat, we were gently propelled through the serene waters by two skilled men using bamboo poles. The experience was a world away from the adrenaline-pumping surf sessions I’m used to, but it was equally exhilarating in its own right. The backwaters were alive with the sights and sounds of nature. Sea eagles soared majestically above us, while kingfishers and flycatchers flitted playfully among the trees. The water’s surface mirrored the vibrant colors of flowering bushes, water lilies, and hibiscus, creating a living painting that unfolded with every gentle push of the boat.
Our first stop was a backwater island where we witnessed the traditional craft of coir rope making. Watching the local women expertly weave coconut fibers into sturdy ropes was a humbling reminder of the rich cultural heritage that thrives in these villages. The intricate process of weaving coconut leaves into roofing tiles was equally fascinating, showcasing the resourcefulness and creativity of the Keralan people.
Spice and Everything Nice
After a delicious vegetarian meal served on banana leaves at the Green Island resort, we embarked on a smaller canoe for a more intimate exploration of the narrow backwaters. The canoe ride was a sensory delight, as we navigated through spice gardens filled with the intoxicating aromas of cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, and sandalwood. Our guide’s explanations brought the spices to life, adding depth to the vibrant tapestry of sights and smells that surrounded us.
The day concluded with a visit to a typical Keralan home, where we were treated to tea and snacks. It was the perfect ending to a day that had been as enriching as it was relaxing. As I sipped my tea, I couldn’t help but reflect on the unique beauty of the backwaters and the warmth of the people who call this place home. The Kerala Backwater Cruise was a journey into the heart of Kerala, offering a glimpse into a way of life that is both timeless and deeply connected to nature. It’s an experience that I would recommend to anyone looking to explore the world beyond the waves.
