They are fixed land installations used for fishing, commonly referred to as “Chinese fishing nets” in India, but formally known as “shore operated lift nets.” These impressive structures extend horizontal nets over 20 meters wide, supported by mechanical devices. Each installation stands at least 10 meters tall, featuring a cantilever with a net suspended over the water and large stones as counterweights. Operated by a team of up to six fishermen, these nets are prevalent in coastal southern China and Indochina, but in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they attract tourists. This unique fishing method was introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century and is rare in India.

The manual method of cleaning has remained unchanged for centuries. The laundry was originally set up during Dutch rule for washing military uniforms, and the workers’ ancestors hail from Tamil Nadu.
