- Chinese Fishing Nets - Known locally as Cheena vala, these stationary lift nets are a distinctive feature in India. They are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as “Chinese fishing nets” in India, the formal term is shore-operated lift nets. These impressive structures extend horizontal nets over 20 meters wide, supported by mechanical contraptions. Each installation stands at least 10 meters tall, featuring a cantilever with a net suspended over the sea and large stones as counterweights on the opposite end. A team of up to six fishermen operates each net. Although these nets are prevalent along the coasts of southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a popular tourist attraction.
