Duration: 8 hours, 30 minutes
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights
  • Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge - The boat will drive into the wildlife refuge where you will hope to see wild manatees on the river. You will be on the boat at least 90 mins.
  • Homosassa River - We will visit the State Park at Homosassa. You will walk around the State Park and see the animals and view the manatees in the underwater viewing chamber at this hospital facility for injured manatees. There is also a cafe at the park so you could purchase lunch here if you wish, or if you prefer to pack yourself a picnic they do have picnic tables you can use inside the park.
  • Crystal River - Upon arrival at the picturesque Crystal River, you will enjoy a fabulous narrated boat tour. You will be provided masks, snorkels & fins, and encouraged to swim alongside these friendly creatures under the guidance of certified dive masters.

The manatees are endangered and have come to the Florida springs year-round to find shelter and food. In the winter months the manatee population can reach several hundred and during summer, the average count is 80. They are “gentle giants” and have no teeth.

After your cruise, you head to Homosassa State Wildlife Park, famous throughout Florida for the rehabilitation of injured animals. It is here you’ll have the chance to see the current manatee residents at the park during an informative and entertaining feeding session with one of the park rangers. You’ll also see bears, panthers, alligators and even a hippo as you explore the rest of the park.

Roundtrip transport from the Orlando area and a knowledgeable driver-guide is also included.

Additional Information

Experience authentic Florida… Get up-close with the docile manatee and admire the picturesque Crystal River as you navigate through the Homosassa State Wildlife Park.

The excursion takes you to Crystal River where you have an opportunity to snorkel and swim alongside wild manatees. Don’t forget to pack some breakfast snacks as the trip begins early in the morning.

After a comprehensive safety briefing and once you’ve collected your mask, snorkel, & fins (you’d need to rent a wetsuit for $15 if you’re swimming), you’re ready to board the boat. You’re free to decide whether you want to swim or snorkel, or simply enjoy the serene boat ride while observing nature.

When manatees are seen, you have the chance to enter the river for some memorable photo opportunities.

In the afternoon, wander around Homosassa State Park. This park is a sanctuary for numerous rescued native animal species. You’ll be there during lunch hours and you may choose to eat at the park cafe, or bring your own picnic lunch if you’d like. A truly Floridian day out!

Swimming with Manatee - Our guide/driver, Oscar was very good. He answered any questions and gave great advice. Our boat captain and guide for the manatee swim was excellent. My tip: take the least amount that you can on the boat trip. What you take, will get wet. The walk through Homosassa Springs is a charming animal park. The airboat ride was impressive. It’s a huge boat. Very comfortable bench seats. The driver skills were very impressive. The scenery was breath taking!! Lots of birds and alligators. We got unbelievably close to the alligators. Still at a safe distance. Marvellous fun a great way to end our adventure for the day.

Best guide to get us to Swim w/the manatees and Homosassa Park - Greg was our driver/tour guide to get us to Swim w/the manatees and Homassas Park - he is amazing! Greg is very personable and knowledgeable about the area, provided great ideas of things to do on the rest of our vacation. Cannot forget his magic tricks - totally astounding! And who can forget his jokes?🤣. We had to Google our jokes but not him - one after the other without missing a beat! He made this such a memorable trip!!

It’s a must! - The swimming with Manaties was amazing. The park afterwards is a small zoo. It’s nice to see native animals, but not I am not really a fan of the zoo concept, so would have preferred something else instead.

Amazing experience - An amazing day from beginning to end. Oscar our driver was so nice and helping. The two men at the manatee swim took good care of us and we got to see them close without forcing us upon them. Recommend this to everyone. It ended up being over 11 hours wich for me is a plus.

Some fun, much disappointment - Our drivers and guides were professional and personable. The boats and gear were clean, like new, and comfortable. Our manatee excursion was disappointing due to the fact that the visibility was very poor and the manatees had left the crystal river area. The driver knew about this beforehand that it would be challenging to see a manatee. We only saw one, far from the trip advisor pictures for the ad. Another disappointment was the $38 in parking we had to pay at Disney Swan, our pick up point. Lastly, the trip completion time was incorrectly communicated with us. We were told, via phone operator, the finish time was 3pm. We didnt get back to our car until 630pm. As a result, my husband had to miss a work related call. We were disappointed with this part of our experience. A return call/message from Viator would be appreciated.

Cancelled trip - Unfortunately, the company cancelled just the night before our trip (just as we were going to bed for the early start the next day). I was communicating with them via email right up until the day before that confirming the exact location of the pick-up point, so it really was such a disappointment. Fortunately, we managed to find another company that could book for us to swim with manatees that day, so we did that and used Uber to get there instead, which actually worked out brilliantly.

Not what I expected - Do not waste your money or time on this excursion. Here's our experience. 6:45am We were picked up at our hotel - a little late but nothing terrible. 8:30am We arrived to birds underwater dive shop. We got our gear, changed, watched a 10 min video and were ready to get on the boat. 9:30 got on boat and started out to our destination. 10:00 arrived and due to terrible conditions (apparently a major storm in Oct/Nov 2023 devastated the area and now it's murky and the manatees are starving and are hard to find according to the tour guides) we searched for manatee sightings 10:15 we were in the water and swam over to see a single manatee for maybe 20 secs 10:25 we were told we had to get back in the boat as we had to head back for the next tour group. Do you see the problem here? We were only able to experience the water and even have the opportunity to see what we came for (manatees) for 10 mins. 10 ridiculously short minutes. 11:00 dropped off at dive shop / changed etc 11:30 - head for homosassa springs wildlife state park and are marooned there until 2:45pm. There is no sea world or the San Diego zoo this is a small dinky little zoo that you can look at in 30 mins. We start the return to the hotel which drops us off at about 5pm. An entire day wasted for 10 mins in the water. Is that what you want to spend your money and time on?
