• Kirkjubour - The journey begins at Kirkjubø, the historic cultural hub of the Faroe Islands, where visitors can feel transported to the Middle Ages. A brief stroll through this picturesque village will reveal tales of its historical events, myths, and legends that have linked Kirkjubø and Sandoy over the centuries.
• Skopun - Covering just 9 km2, Skopun is the smallest municipality in the Faroe Islands. It was once renowned for having the world’s largest mailbox. Although the record has since been surpassed, the impressive 7.42-meter-tall blue mailbox remains a notable attraction amidst the village’s narrow streets. Before the tunnel was built, the harbor served as the primary connection between Streymoy and Sandoy. On clear days, the ferry port on Streymoy and Kirkjubø are visible.
• Sandur - Nestled between Sandsvatn, the third-largest lake in the Faroe Islands, and the sea, lies a stunning white sandy beach adorned with mystical dunes. This area is home to several rare plants and insects not found elsewhere in the Faroe Islands. Although it is a protected area, visitors can still explore it. Research and excavations around Sandur suggest it may be the oldest village in the Faroe Islands, dating back to 200-300 AD, or possibly earlier. On clear days, the island Skúvoy, known for its diverse bird population and designated as a Ramsar area, can be seen.
• Soltuvik - Located on the island’s west side, this tranquil cove is often frequented by seals. However, during inclement weather, waves crash dramatically against the bird cliffs. Several ships have been wrecked on the reefs off Søltuvík. Along the single-lane road between Sandur and Søltuvík, visitors will encounter intriguing sights, such as petrified bark and tree trunk imprints in the basalt stone and a large rock adorned with colorful knitwear.
• Skarvanes - A 5-kilometer drive along a narrow road leads to Skarvanes, Sandoy’s smallest village with approximately 10 residents. Inhabited since the 1400s, locals have traditionally worked the land and collected driftwood. It is also the birthplace of Faroese visual art. The views west towards Skúvoy and south to Stóra and Lítla Dímun are breathtaking, complemented by abundant bird life.
• Dalur Kirke - The quaint village of Dalur is beautifully situated in a secluded valley, surrounded by towering mountains. To reach it, one must navigate about 5 kilometers along a narrow, single-lane road high on the steep mountainside. Occasionally, the road is closed due to rockslides. While it is a stunning location, visiting depends on weather and road conditions.
• Husavik - Before reaching the village of Húsavík, visitors are welcomed by its distinctive stone walls that delineate the boundary between infields and outfields. The village features several ancient stone-built houses, ruins, and plots that date back to the Viking Age. At its center are remnants of the farm once owned by the influential Guðrun Sjúrðardóttir, who also held land as far as Shetland. The village boasts a charming east-facing beach, a favorite spot for both young and old.
• Skalavik - Skálavík is recognized for its expansive fields and scattered houses. It hosts a boarding school and will soon feature a large salmon hatchery. The harbor area includes a cozy café housed in a former store and post office. During summer, the village becomes livelier with visitors staying in caravans, summer houses, or the guesthouse, and children playing by the stream.
