Bringing history so colourfully to life… - Hidden away down St Mary’s Lane off Kilkenny’s High Street the Medieval Mile Museum is a treasure trove of early and medieval maps, artefacts and stone masonry that speaks to the historical importance of the city - within Ireland but also Europe. We would count among its major treasures John Halpin, tour guide extraordinaire. After many years in the US he returned to his roots and has made a second career of introducing visitors to his home town’s extraordinary past. Starting off in the museum, we then worked our way along the Medieval Mile, with John regaling us with stories of witches, wars, merchants, disgruntled bishops and famous as well as infamous sons and daughters of this incredibly charming and atmospheric small city. We felt transported back in time and would do it again to hear John’s stories all over again.

Wonderful story-telling - We had John Halpin as tour guide. He gave a wonderful talk as we walked through the medieval city streets, really bringing it to life with the stories and the descriptions of the characters and the forces at work and in conflict.

Don't miss the city tour - Did the walking tour of the city with Lyn. It was fantastic. Lyn is super knowledgeable and has a great presentation style. It comes across that she loves her job! We spent about 1.5 hours with Lyn and then another hour inside the museum. Leave yourself time to enjoy both the inside and the outside. The architecture of the church alone is fascinating! We then did the Lego hunt. Lyn made all of Lego models herself (and not with a kit). This museum is a highlight to our time in Kilkenny

History of Kilkenny with a knowledgeable local tour guide - Interesting and educational tour. Our guide was a kilkenny native and shared so much history of the city. It was a small group which was nice too. He pointed out a lot of landmarks and points of interest. We were able to then return to the museum later in the day to explore further.

Do the guided tour! - We did a 30 min self-tour prior to the guided tour for a quick look around, but I definitely recommend the guided tour with John. He's very knowledgeable and definitely one of my favorite guides in Ireland! Would've loved to have him guide our whole tour of Ireland. The museum is interesting on its own... but having a guide provide you with a more in-depth history is worth it! P.S. There's also a scavenger hunt for Lego's to keep the kids entertained.
